Just back from: The Dominican Republic

Becky Allen-Gurr, Personal Travel Expert at Kuoni Chester, has just returned from a whirlwind week exploring some of the Dominican Republic’s best-loved resorts. In this review, she shares what to expect from this colourful corner of the Caribbean.

What surprised you most about the Dominican Republic?

People often underestimate the Dominican Republic, but it’s one of the best-value Caribbean islands for premium all-inclusive experiences. I was blown away by the quality of the resorts and the food. Beyond that, I didn’t expect the island to feel so American. Driving from Punta Cana airport, the wide highways, huge billboards and big-name restaurants reminded me of the States – it made arriving somewhere new feel reassuringly familiar.

When’s the best time to visit the Dominican Republic?

The UK winter is ideal – warm, dry and sunny. The island enjoys warmth year-round, but April to November can bring more rain and the odd storm. I’d say spring is the sweet spot for great value and steady sunshine.

How easy is it to get there?

Super easy. British Airways flies direct from London Gatwick to Punta Cana year-round – it’s around eight to nine hours’ flight time. The timings worked perfectly – a day flight out and an overnight home, so you can snooze through most of the return. The crew were brilliant, the meals were well prepared and there was a well-stocked bar service. And a little insider tip: there’s a free snack cupboard at the back of the plane you can help yourself to any time.

Which hotels stood out to you?

I was really impressed by the sister resorts, Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana. One’s family-friendly, the other adults-only, and guests staying in either can enjoy all the facilities across both. The creativity in the restaurant design was incredible – there’s an Indian restaurant built around a real train carriage and another where you enter through a fridge door.

I’m still thinking about the dining at Eden Rock Cap Cana – fresh seafood along with top-shelf pours like chilled Whispering Angel and Moët & Chandon. But my top pick has to be Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. It’s a vast 7,000-acre estate with villas, a marina, an amphitheatre, equestrian centre and its own beach club. You get a golf buggy to explore, which makes it all the more fun, and the service is world-class.

What’s a must-do experience beyond the resorts?

A boat trip is a must. We stopped at shallow sandbanks before sailing on to Saona Island, where the water was impossibly clear. The local crew made the day – friendly, full of energy and playing a mix of island tunes that set the perfect tone for a laid-back adventure on the water.

How would you describe the food scene?

Delicious and surprisingly varied. Every resort we stayed in served delectable food, from just-caught seafood to melt-in-your-mouth beef. I loved that Secrets and Dreams always included a local dish on the menu, so you got a taste of the island alongside the international favourites.

Is the Dominican Republic best for couples, families or adventure-seekers?

Honestly, it suits everyone. For couples, I’d recommend Secrets Tides Punta Cana – beautifully designed and full of romantic spots to unwind, plus plenty to do if you like to stay active. For families, Dreams La Romana is a delight. You can walk along the beach to Bayahibe port for local shops and boat trips to Catalina or Saona Island. It suits families who like a mix of downtime and day trips.

How does the Dominican Republic deliver on value for money?

It’s fantastic value for money. The hotels have really raised the bar in recent years – all-inclusive here genuinely means everything’s covered, and the quality of food and service stands shoulder to shoulder with the Caribbean’s most sought-after islands. Because so much produce is local, it’s fresher too.

Any final tips for first-timers?

Pack a few US dollars, as most shops and tips use that currency, and learn a couple of Spanish phrases – it goes a long way with the locals. Tipping is expected but small ($1–$2 for good service). And don’t forget to pack a bit of curiosity – this island is worth exploring beyond the poolside.

The verdict?

The Dominican Republic delivers the full Caribbean experience – powder-soft beaches, luxurious resorts, excellent value and a warm, easy-going vibe. Whether you’re after romance, family time or a sun-soaked reset, it’s one to have firmly on your list.
