Day 1

Sandakan to Kinabatangan Wetlands

Your journey begins in Sandakan with a gentle introduction to Borneo’s most cherished wildlife. Visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre offers an insight into the region’s conservation story. From the Sandakan Yacht Club Jetty, you drift along the Kinabatangan River on a beautifully scenic cruise, where mangrove forests and jungle-clad banks reveal macaques, proboscis monkeys and, with a little luck, wild orangutans in their natural home. At Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort, time slows; enjoy lunch, settle in, and later head out for a serene river expedition as the forest shifts into its golden hour. A night walk along the boardwalk completes the day — an atmospheric wander into a world alive with nocturnal calls.

Day 2

Abai

Wake to the soft dawn light shimmering across the ox‑bow lake of Danau Pitas, explored on an early-morning cruise that feels utterly peaceful. Breakfast in the heart of nature makes the moment even more special. Continue to Kampung Abai, a small riverside community where you’ll meet the Orang Sungai people and experience a glimpse of daily life along Sabah’s longest river. The day unfolds at a relaxed pace back at the resort, with time to unwind before another gentle river journey in the afternoon, giving you the chance to spot wildlife, watch village life unfold and soak up the tranquil rhythm of the mangroves. As night falls, a river safari reveals a different side of the Kinabatangan, where owls, night herons and other nocturnal creatures move through the darkened forest.

Day 3

Abai to Sandakan

Your final morning offers quiet moments to explore the surrounding boardwalks, where wild orangutans, silver leaf monkeys and vibrant birdlife often appear among the trees. After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll journey back to Sandakan on a scenic river cruise that traces coastal villages and opens out toward the city’s waterfront, also known as “Little Hong Kong” for its colourful energy. It’s a gentle end to a trip packed with wildlife highlights, cultural moments and the kind of landscapes that stay with you.
