Fugitives' Drift Guest House
The home of powerful storytelling
With sweeping views across Isandlawana, Fugitives' Drift Guest House is a charming and intimate property with just six rooms.
Many of the original features of this former farmhouse have been retained including the verandas that lead into the gardens, swimming pool and outdoor dining area. It's a wonderful base for joining one of the world-class battlefield tours that were pioneered here. Wake up to views across the gardens, which attract plenty of birds. After breakfast, perhaps take a morning tour of Isandlwana to learn how the British Army was defeated by Zulu warriors. Later in the afternoon, head out to the site of Rorke's Drive where 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded. Between the battlefield tours, you can explore the surrounding nature reserve on foot, by bike or on horseback or relax at the Guest House and delve into the many history books and browse the collection of battlefield memorabilia.

Our Expert Tips
Relive the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift
People from all over the world come to Fugitives’ Drift to reimagine the Anglo-Zulu War. David and Nicky Rattray built the lodge in 1989 with a vision to bring the story back to life. The property overlooks the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, two locations that played a pivotal part in both South African and British military history. If you’ve seen the movie Zulu, you’ll be familiar with the spirit and drama of these encounters, but nothing illustrates these elements more beautifully than the art of story-telling with authentic insights from both the British and Zulu sides.
Off-road adventure at Fugitives’ Drift
Not only is it embedded in history, but Fugitives’ Drift Lodge is one of those few places in South Africa from where, if you wanted, you could explore a private game reserve completely on your own. Without a predator in sight, giraffe, zebra, impala and bushbuck are just a few of the thriving creatures that traverse this land.
Giving back at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge
In isiZulu, the word khula means to grow, and that was the vision when David and Nicky Rattray set out to found the David Rattray Foundation, now known as KHULA Education. At Fugitives’ Lodge the cost of your stay incudes a charitable contribution split between KHULA and Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve. This helps ensure the development of schools as well as the sustainability of the surrounding environment and wildlife.
Rooms
There are just six rooms in the Guest House and each is individually decorated.
Facilities
Guest House clients enjoy meals communally either in the dining room or on the veranda.
What's Included
Breakfast, lunch and dinner, teas and coffees, conservation fees, graves walking tour and unguided walks on Fugitives' Drift Game Reserve.

The David Rattray Foundation provides infrastructure and a team of educators to support early childhood development through its education programme.

We recommend doing the Battlefield Tours in chronological order: the Isandlwana Tour morning tour followed by the afternoon Rorke's Drift Tour.
