Canyon Spirit: Rockies to the Red Rock

Brought to you as the same folk behind the rightfully iconic Rocky Mountaineer, the Canyon Spirit brings the luxe, slow travel vibe to the American Rockies.

Disconnect from the modern world and practice some beautifully backdropped mindfulness as you make the journey through granite mountains, through ochre-rock canyons and along meandering rivers. We’ve bookended the three-day train ride with a few nights in the cities of Denver and Salt Lake City, two one-of-a-kind cities sitting in the shadow of the Rockies.

Who is this holiday for?

Slow travelling

If you’ve already been lucky enough to travel on board the Rocky Mountaineer and want more of the same vibes, the Canyon Spirit is a no-brainer. Just like the experience on board its Canadian cousin, there’s top-notch dining, exceptional service and incredibly informative commentary from the experts; what you don’t discover about this part of the US following your adventure, won’t be worth knowing. Phone service along the route is patchy to non-existent and there’s no Wi-Fi but who needs to scroll when the scenery is this spectacular?

How to do this trip

On the rails

This is a simple itinerary with a couple of city stays and a train journey, however, we can mix it up and add the Canyon Spirit to a more complex exploration of the western states from Colorado to Utah and beyond. When it comes to the train journey, you can pick from a couple of levels of service: Signature and Premier. Everyone receives world-class service, the finest south-west dishes, included drinks, and comfy seating. The upgrade to Premier levels up your holiday. You’ll get access to a lounge car and an outdoor viewing area as well as an elevated dining experience with paired wines, signature cocktails and premium drinks.

Days 1-3

Denver

Sitting pretty at 1600 metres above sea level and in the shadow of the even loftier peaks of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is part metropolis, part mountain playground gateway. We suggest spending a couple of days here to both see the city to seek out its sights, craft breweries and indie restaurants, and head out into nature. Rocky Mountain National Park, Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods are all within easy reach and make the perfect day trips.

Day 4

Glenwood Springs

It’s time to board the Canyon Spirit, your daytime home for the next three days. Today, the train will wind up westwards into the Rockies towards the resort city of Glenwood Springs. The journey is sedate but scenic, taking you through the mountains and across the Continental Divide as you wine and dine, and watch the world go by. Tonight, you will stay at a Glenwood Springs hotel picked by Canyon Spirit and your bags will be waiting for you in your room. Transfers to the station in Denver are not included. You can check in at The Rally Hotel, Indigo Denver Union Station or The Crawford Hotel, all of which are close to Union Station. Canyon Spirit staff will walk you and your fellow passengers to the station where you’ll board the train.

Day 5

Moab

The scenery shifts from grey granite to red-hued sandstone as you cross travel through western Colorado into Utah (keep an eye out for the state line rock carving. The train will often follow the course of the Colorado River (of Grand Canyon fame) as it winds its way through canyons so there’ll never be a bad view. Tonight’s pit stop is the national park-surrounded city of Moab.

Day 6

Salt Lake City

The final leg from Thomson Springs completes your journey across the Colorado Plateau and towards Utah’s capital city. The train will make its way through Price Canyon, through the Thistle Tunnels and back into more the urban landscapes of Provo and the suburbs of the Salt Lake City.

Days 7-8

Salt Lake City

A couple of nights in SLC is plenty of time to see the unique sights like the hard-to-miss Salt Lake Temple – the world’s largest Mormon church – the Salt Lake City Tabernacle, and the Washington D.C. inspired Capitol building. There’ll also be time to get out and explore the equally singular natural wonders a stone’s throw from downtown. You could head out to the alien-esque salt flats of the Great Salt Lake Desert, and to Antelope Island, a huge island on the eastern side of the lake where bison, big horn sheep and other mammals and waterfowl are the only permanent inhabitants.

Road trip to Vegas

Swap the rails for the road as you cross the desert on the way to Las Vegas. Travel south through the Martian landscapes of south-west Utah, visiting two of the country’s most jaw-dropping national parks, Bryce Canyon and Zion. Cross the state line into Nevada and soak up the bright light, big city vibes of the Entertainment Capital of the World.
