 The Observatory Hotel Christchurch

Heritage charm, city buzz

Check into a beautifully kept secret inside the Arts Centre, all wrapped in Christchurch’s creative, heritage-filled energy.

Located within the historic Arts Centre precinct, the sumptuous hotel sits among galleries, studios, cafés and courtyards that make every stroll feel a little like you’ve joined the local arts scene (without suddenly needing to become good at pottery). You’re only moments from the Botanic Gardens, Riverside Market and the city’s cultural heart, yet you might find you have to tear yourself away from the opulent folds of The Observatory and its rich colours, curated art, bold wallpapers, and lovingly restored details. This place has a personality you remember long after checkout.

Why we love The Observatory Hotel Christchurch

  • The setting inside the Arts Centre is genuinely special, offering heritage charm, quiet courtyards and an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down in the best way.

  • Rooms feel bespoke and full of character without tipping into museum territory. They are cosy, thoughtfully arranged, and dotted with small touches.

  • The restaurants and bars are warm and inviting, with plenty of nooks where you can sip coffee, read or pretend you’re drafting your next great novel.

  • Practical conveniences, including friendly staff who know the neighbourhood well, easy access to cafés and markets, and a sense of calm despite the central location, make city stays wonderfully simple.

Facilities

  • Restaurants & bars
  • Board

The hotel doesn’t have a full restaurant, but breakfast is done well with a simple, satisfying continental spread served in a stylish, welcoming lobby. For everything else, you are surrounded by great choices. Within the Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora, you will find cafés, bakeries, a wine bar, and even street-food options. You can start your day with expertly made coffee at Quad or enjoy pastries or something a little stronger at Bijou Bar. For the evening, you can wander to Cellar Door for wine tastings and seasonal small plates or grab an easy bite from The Rolling Om food truck. Everything is close enough to reach on foot, which makes choosing where to eat wonderfully spontaneous.
