Best Time To Visit Montenegro
Best time to visit Montenegro
On Montenegro’s coast, summers are long and hot, making it a tempting beach break destination beneath sunny skies. That’s not to say other seasons should be ruled out. In spring and autumn, temperatures cool down nicely, making it ideal for exploring, kayaking, or strolling comfortably outdoors. Winters remain mild but bring moody skies, damp days, and occasional showers. Kotor stays open all year, but between late October and March, many smaller cafés, restaurants, and tour operators scale back or close. Boat trips are limited, beach bars vanish, and some hotels take a winter break. The trade-off? Fewer crowds, lower prices, and a slower, more local feel.

Montenegro Weather by Month
January in Montenegro
January is slow and moody, in the best way. Temperatures hover around 7 to 10°C, with mist curling around the bay and barely a soul on the hiking trails. It’s a time for woolly jumpers and coffee breaks between city explorations.
February in Montenegro
Still very much off-season, but with a little more daylight and slightly brighter skies. You’ll get the occasional sunny day that hints at spring, and maybe even a small street festival if Carnival falls early. The Old Town is peaceful, and you won’t need to book a table anywhere. Perfect for the unhurried traveller.
March in Montenegro
March can’t quite decide what it wants to be. One day it’s crisp and grey, the next feels like early summer. Trees start to bud, the bay brightens, and the trails above town come back to life. It’s a great month for hikers, and anyone who wants to be here just before the world starts paying attention again.
April in Montenegro
By April, everything softens. The light turns golden, the hills go green, and boats begin to reappear in the harbour. It’s warm enough for lunch outside, but cool enough for proper exploring. Expect temperatures around 18 to 20°C.
May in Montenegro
May is a bit of a show-off, but in a good way. It’s reliably warm, the sea is pleasant, and there’s that early summer energy without the peak season crowds. Perast is dreamy, the trails are dry, and the markets start to hum. Long days, comfortable heat, and every reason to linger outdoors.
June in Montenegro
Summer’s here. Temperatures climb to the high 20s, the sea’s lovely for swimming, and the restaurants are in full swing. It’s the sweet spot for beachy days and lively evenings, without the full-on bustle of July and August. It's a great time to hire a kayak or take a boat out to explore the coastline.
July in Montenegro
Hot, busy, and full of energy. Daytime highs often reach 32 or 33°C, with clear skies. Mornings are made for walking the walls or heading up to Lovćen, afternoons for floating in the bay. If you’re after peace, save Old Town visits for early or late.
August in Montenegro
August is full-throttle summer. It’s hot, the sea is warm, and everything’s in full swing. Yes, it’s popular, but it’s also a lot of fun if you plan it right. Think early morning swims, late dinners, and perhaps the occasional afternoon nap.
September in Montenegro
September gets it just right. The water’s still warm, the weather’s still golden, and the crowds have mostly departed. It’s a brilliant time to do all the summertime favourites, but with fewer queues and more space to breathe.
October in Montenegro
October arrives with cooler evenings and a sense of calm. The air is fresh, and the landscape begins to take on an earthy, rich quality. Temperatures linger in the low 20s, and the light gets that softer, photogenic quality.
November in Montenegro
Days are shorter, but still bright enough, and the pace drops right off. Highs reach the mid-teens, rain shows up now and then, and you’ll have whole stretches of waterfront to yourself.
December in Montenegro
December brings a quiet kind of sparkle. There are festive lights in Old Town, the odd market or live band. Days hover around 10 or 12°C, and while the beach isn’t on the cards, the mountain air and Christmas atmosphere make it surprisingly appealing. Bring a coat and stay a little longer.
