Essential Australia
A two-week trip that visits three Australian cities and the Whitsunday Islands.

This is a great intro-to-Aus holiday that hits a trio of classic hot spots across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland but throws in Western Australia twist on the way. You’ll fly to Perth (perhaps making the most of the direct service from London) and use it as your jump off point for the rest of your adventure Down Under.
Itinerary overview
Highlights of trip
Newbies
As the name would suggest, this is the perfect trip for rookies who may be overwhelmed by the distance to and size of Australia but don’t know where to start. By flying directly to Perth, you get the longest journey out the way; but at just under 17 hours, it’s not quite as intimidating a journey as if you were starting off in Sydney or Melbourne. Basically, you’ll be using Perth as a stopover – and what a stunning place to pause.
Catch flights
This is a simple multi-stop holiday with each of the four destinations – Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and the Whitsundays – linked by domestic flights. These are some serious distances so flying is the only way to pack in as these far-and-wide places in a two-week trip. Two nights in Perth and three nights everywhere else are recommended but there’s always scope to up the time you spend in any place.
Perth
When it comes to gateways to Australia, Perth is a stunner. And the fact that it’s nearly 1700 miles closer to home, it’s a no brainer to make it your starting off point. You’ve got beaches by the dozen, riverside gardens, and a buzzy-but-compact downtown packed with bars, restaurants, museums and galleries; there’s every slice of urban life coupled with plenty of nearby nature to wonder at. Pop over to Rottnest Island to meet the inquisitive quokkas, high tail it to one of the beaches to mess around by or in the water or get to grips with the city’s Aboriginal culture.
Melbourne
Next stop: metropolitan Melbourne. It’s also on a river and a stone’s throw from the sea but the vibes and climate vary quite a bit from Perth; this is much more big-city Australia. In the CBD, you can stroll through cool street-art-bedecked neighbourhoods, stopping for some of the best brews you’ll ever taste in trendy cafés, or wander the riverfront and sun yourself in waterside gardens. And if you’re hankering to get out of the city, it’s within easy reach of Victoria’s poster-child attractions; there are the wineries of the Yarra Valley, the breathtaking Great Ocean Road, and Philip Island, home of the adorable Little Penguins that parade back to their nests every evening.
The Savoy Hotel on Little Collins offers a contemporary interior complemented by a stunning heritage building façade.
This ultra-modern hotel on Chapel Street is adorned with artwork of renowned Australian artist Dr John Olsen.
Hamilton Island
Swap the city for the reef as you fly north to the Whitsundays. This is your chance to check out the otherworldly beauty of the Great Barrier Reef without travelling way up to Tropical North Queensland. You’ll land on the glorious Hamilton Island, a sun-drenched playground with a cluster of resorts that’s right on the reef’s doorstep. It’s also just a short hop by boat from the show-stopping Whitehaven Beach which is best viewed from Hill Inlet Lookout. It’s pure seaside bliss.
This spacious hotel opposite Catseye Beach is a great choice for families.
This world-class resort lies at the secluded northernmost tip of Hamilton Island.

Sydney
It wouldn’t be a first timer’s visit to Australia without a few days in sensational Sydney. This is a city bursting with icons, whether it’s the bridge, the beaches or the cultural landmarks and you’ve got a couple of full days (or perhaps more?) to pack in as many as possible. You can add on backstage tours of the Opera House, a bridge climb, a seaplane flight or a dinner cruise on the harbour; and if you fancy getting out of the city for a day, we can arrange a trip that takes you inland to the jaw-dropping Blue Mountains.
On the foreshore of Darling Harbour with direct access by a footbridge, the popular PARKROYAL is just a short walk from the harbourside complex,
With views over the spectacular Sydney Harbour, this is one of Sydney’s most popular hotels.
Singapore
Break up the journey home with a pit stop in the glorious garden city of Singapore. It’s the perfect place to dwell for a couple of nights to start the body clock shift but also to fit in a bit more sightseeing. See Hindu and Buddhist temples, explore contrasting neighbourhoods, marvel at the botanic gardens, nurse a Singapore sling at Raffles, and check out the light show at the Supertree Grove of Gardens by the Bay.
