Kalimpong's heritage property is the perfect base for Himalayan explorations.
The Elgin Silver Oaks was built in 1930 as the home of a British jute magnate. He sold it to architect Frederick Deshraj who, like its subsequent owners, expanded the building, adding extra floors and more windows to take in the magnificent mountain vistas. Silver Oaks is now a boutique heritage property, hosting guests who have come to explore Kalimpong’s famous monasteries including Tsonga Gumba, the oldest Bhutanese monastery in the district. For the adventurous, white-water rafting on the Teesta River, one of India’s fastest water courses, is a popular activity.
