Dreams of Zanzibar

Experience a Zanzibar beach holiday with a difference on this 10-night trip visiting Matemwe, Stone Town and Bawe Island

Following the hotel-hopping trend to really get under the skin of a destination, you will visit three different areas of the exotic spice island of Zanzibar. Start by relaxing on the white sands of Matemwe at an adults-only resort before heading to the historical UNESCO World Heritage site of Stone Town. The grand finale is a luxurious stay on Bawe Island where butler service and a private pool come as standard. We've deliberately slowed down the pace of this itinerary but if you wish to add in any extra nights along the way or want to increase the indulgence with an upgrade to a private pool villa or an overwater bungalow just let our team know and we'll do the rest.

Day 1

Arrive Zanzibar

Arrive into Zanzibar where you will be transferred 90-minutes to the north-east of the island. Arrive ready to slip into island life and relax in your spacious villa. Overnight Matemwe Attitude.

Day 2

Matemwe

Time to relax and enjoy the resort's land and water-based experiences. Away from the beach, we can arrange a tour of a farm to see how spices and tropical fruits are grown and harvested, or go in search of the endangered red colobus monkeys on a guided walk through Jozani Forest. Overnight Matemwe Attitude.

Zanzibar Spice Tour

Zanzibar

Learn how Zanzibar’s world-famous spices are grown with a visit to a local farm. See how these precious spices are produced, from seed to harvest and then exported all over the world. The farm is also home to tropical fruit trees such as coconut, mango and papaya, some of which your guide will pick for you to sample.

On this half-day tour, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken to one of the island’s top plantations, which has been growing various spices for generations.

Throughout the tour, your guide will point out everything from black pepper, vanilla and ginger to turmeric, cardamom and cinnamon. One of the most famous spices you'll see are cloves, which locals often sun-dry and then squeeze to extract their oil for use in medicated soaps.

Jozani Forest Tour

Zanzibar

Visit the Jozani Forest to spot rare wildlife in a protected natural reserve. Covering over 6,200 acres, it’s a haven of trees and plants known for their medicinal qualities, as well as wildlife including monkeys, bush pigs, tree hyraxes, dik diks and over 40 species of birds.

This three-hour tour starts with a transfer to the forest, which is a protected natural reserve and part of Zanzibar’s only national park, Jozani-Chawaka.

You’ll take a guided walk along the forest trails, stopping to look at the local flora and wildlife. Jozani Forest is filled with various species of trees, including eucalyptus, baobab, mahogany and teak and is a sanctuary for red colobus monkeys. Previously endangered, there are now about 2,500 in the reserve and their numbers are slowly increasing. The monkeys are very relaxed and used to visitors, so you can get incredible photos of them playing in the treetops and feeding on fruit.

Next, you’ll head over the other side of the park to see the mangroves, which are formed by salt water flooding in from the ocean. There’s a wooden boardwalk here which you can wander along for a glimpse into this lush ecosystem. Afterwards, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Zanzibar.

Days 3 to 5

Matemwe

A further three full days to explore or unwind at your own pace. Perhaps start with a sunrise yoga session before going for a snorkel in the lagoon. Take a guided coastal walk, learn about the resort's sustainability programme with a visit to the Marine Discovery Centre or embark on a cruise on a traditional dhow boat. Overnight Matemwe Attitude.

Day 6

Matemwe & Stone Town

Today you will leave Matemwe to spend a couple of days in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town. We've chosen the Park Hyatt for its central location - the historic centre is within walking distance. Explore the labyrinthine narrow streets, see the intricately carved doors before haggling for a bargain in the markets. Return to your hotel to enjoy roof top sundowners whilst watching the dhows come back in after a day out fishing. Overnight Park Hyatt Zanzibar

Day 7

Stone Town

By staying in Stone Town, you can take advantage of early morning and evening explorations away from the busier parts of the day when many beach day trippers descend on the town. We've included a guided walking tour, after which you can do some lengths in the hotel's glass-fronted pool or enjoy some pampering in the spa. Overnight Park Hyatt Zanzibar.

Stone Town Tour

Zanzibar

Discover UNESCO-listed Stone Town on this half-day trip, from its decorative Arabic doors to daily market life and Freddie Mercury’s former home.

The guided walking tour starts in Stone Town’s slave market, which lies next to the Anglican church and has a moving memorial sculpture. Here, you’ll learn about the sobering legacy of the slave trade in Zanzibar. You’ll get the chance to explore Darajani Market too, which is a hive of activity for locals. Wander around stalls filled with colourful produce and spices, taste some fresh sugar cane juice and spot the town’s famous carved doors.

Next, you’ll move on to visit the former home of famous Queen singer, Freddie Mercury, the Old Fort and House of Wonder, which was built by some of the island’s first British settlers. After learning about these key landmarks, you'll have time to go shopping for wooden carvings, spices or Tanzanite jewellery. The tour ends with a visit the Forodhani food market. This is the most popular place for locals and tourists to gather in the evening on Zanzibar, as it’s full of Swahili food stalls selling all kinds of seafood, pilau dishes and Indian cuisine. If your tour is in the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a golden sunset from this busy market.

Day 8

Stone Town & Bawe Island

Time to leave Stone Town and take a short speed boat ride to Bawe Island. Set on 30 hectares, Zanzibar's first Maldivian-style resort offers spacious villas with private pools, ocean views and a butler to take care of everything. Overnight Bawe Island.

Days 9 & 10

Bawe Island

Two full days to make the most of island life. The reef here is one of Zanzibar's best diving spots and there's also jet skiing and kite surfing. If that all sounds a little bit too energetic, head to the Zen garden for some meditation, the beach pavilion for yoga and t'ai chi or the spa for a rose quartz crystal facial. Overnight Bawe Island.

Day 11

Bawe Island & Departure

Time to say goodbye to Zanzibar, although we won't blame you if you wish to extend by a few more days. Take the speed boat back to Stone Town where you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
