Makuti roofs, woven from coconut straw, and hand-cast terrazzo floors keep things naturally cool, while furniture made from local Tanzanian materials adds an authentic touch. At Matemwe, eating and drinking is a laid-back affair, with fresh flavours and beachside vibes leading the way. Start your day with a relaxed international buffet, then dive into local barbecue feasts with your feet in the sand. Light bites and cocktails are always close by, whether you’re lounging by the pool or kicking back in the shade. And when pizza cravings hit, wood-fired slices can be delivered straight to your sunbed, no effort required.

Based around the Swahili philosophy of ‘pole pole’ meaning gently and slowly, treatments can be arranged at the resort's spa POZ. Ingredients in the therapies are sourced from sustainably-sourced local plants. Meditation, sunrise and sunset yoga sessions can be arranged.
There is so much to do here. Learn about the Zanzibari spices with a cooking lesson with the chef, discover the art of Swahili textiles at a Kanga workshop and try your hand at weaving coconut leaves. There are regular shows and DJ sets, plus a weekly outdoor cinema under the stars (weather permitting).
Diving, snorkelling and dhow cruises can all be arranged. You can also learn more about Zanzibar's ecosystems with a visit to the Marine Discovery Centre.
