Located in a remote corner in the south of the Abelana Reserve, this intimate camp has just four tents.
Abelana means 'to share amongst each other' in the local Northern Sotho language, a recognition of the partnership between the operators of the camp and the owners of the reserve, the Mashishimale community. Set amongst granite rock outcrops, this friendly and comfortable camp accommodates a maximum of just eight guests. Led by expert guides, every morning starts with a bush walk, a chance to learn about the flora and fauna that make up this 15,000 hectare reserve. Afternoon game drives in open-topped vehicles may bring you closer to the action. Not only is this Big Five territory, hippos, cheetah and, on occasion, wild dog have been seen here. Between activities, the expansive deck overlooking the waterhole is a good spot to relax and take in the far reaching views.
Why we love Abelana Safari Camp
-
Each morning starts with a walk, a chance to get closer to the reserve's smaller species
-
The camp is unfenced and adjacent to Kruger National Park so there's a good chance of seeing the Big Five
-
The heart of the camp is the expansive deck which overlooks an active waterhole
-
Due to the camp's remote location there's no Wi-Fi here, making it the perfect place to digitally detox
Rooms
With just four Meru-style tents this small and intimate camp is perfect for those seeking a safari experience away from the crowds. Due to its remote location, there's no Wi-Fi here so this is the perfect place to literally switch off and immerse yourself in nature.
Facilities
Meals are served in the large tented dining area or outdoors around the fire pit in the boma. There's also an honesty bar.
What's Included
All meals, light snacks before morning walk, high tea, afternoon game drive and community levy.
A typical day starts with a guided morning bush walk where you will learn about the ecosystem as you look for track marks whilst listening to the chorus of birdsong. The afternoon game drive takes place in open-topped vehicles and is a chance to find some of the larger species such as elephant, hippo and big cat predators.
Abelana Game Reserve is a community based project and the camp employs and sources produce from the local area. Due to the scarcity of water in the region, tents only have showers, not baths. Hot water is sourced via gas geysers and the camp is solar powered. Every guest staying at Abelana, pays a levy fee which contributes directly to support the Mashishimale community.
Due to the remote location of the camp, Wi-Fi is not available.
Phones and cameras can be charged in the central lounge.
Restrictions may apply on walking safaris for children under the age of 16.
