 La Sultana Oualidia

The Atlantic, on lagoon time

A 12-room Relais & Châteaux retreat where private terraces, oyster beds, and a protected lagoon shape the stay

La Sultana Oualidia tumbles down a hillside of honey-coloured stone towards one of Morocco’s most extraordinary stretches of water. On one side, the protected lagoon is calm enough for paddleboards, oyster farmers, and wading birds. Beyond the dunes, the Atlantic takes over.

There are just 12 individually designed rooms and suites, but an impressive amount is tucked into the gardens, from a 45-metre pool and cathedral-like stone spa to padel, three restaurants, and an oyster bar on the jetty. Every room has its own terrace and seawater Jacuzzi, plus a phone connecting you to a personal concierge around the clock. This is small-scale hotel life with plenty happening beneath the surface.

Why we love La Sultana Oualidia

  • There may be only 12 rooms, but you get a 45-metre lagoon-facing pool, heated indoor pool, spa, gym, padel court, three restaurants, an oyster bar, and a personal concierge available around the clock.

  • The lagoon isn’t simply the view. You can kayak, paddleboard, surf, head out by traditional boat to the oyster beds, or join a guided birdwatching safari through a protected wetland.

  • Food barely has to travel. Oysters grow in the lagoon, fish and seafood come from local fisheries, and vegetables and herbs are picked from the hotel’s organic garden. Even dinner can move outside, from a table on the jetty to a private picnic beside the Atlantic.

  • Sustainability is something you can actually see. A complimentary one-hour guided tour takes you through the greenhouse, palm plantation, vegetable garden, and lagoon ecosystem, explaining what goes on behind the scenes.

Oualidia does much of the menu planning. Oysters grow in the lagoon below, fishing boats work the Atlantic, and vegetables and herbs come from the hotel’s organic garden. Lunch stays close to the water, dinner moves between French-Moroccan cooking and Far Eastern flavours, and the jetty is waiting when oysters and a glass of Moroccan white wine sound like enough.

La Table de La Sultana
The main dinner restaurant, reserved for hotel guests. Two seasonal menus run side by side, one drawing on French cooking and the other on refined Moroccan flavours, with ingredients from the kitchen garden and local suppliers.

La Table de La Plage
Oysters, lobster, salt-crusted fish, bouillabaisse, grilled meats, and vegetables picked from the hotel garden.

Jan Janz
A small lagoon-facing restaurant beneath a thatched roof, pairing Oualidia seafood and local produce with Far Eastern flavours. Think sea bream ceviche, lobster Tom Yum, sushi, gyoza, and cocktails scented with Moroccan spices.

O Bar
The hotel's oyster bar sits on the jetty. Keep it simple with oysters from the lagoon, or take a traditional boat out to the oyster beds first.

Private Dining
Dinner can be set beneath a candlelit Berber tent on the beach, while private picnics, garden lunches, and seafood barbecues on the jetty can also be arranged.

For a hotel with 12 rooms, the spa is surprisingly substantial. Built in stone with soaring vaulted ceilings, it includes a heated indoor pool, hammam, sauna, Jacuzzi, treatment rooms, and gym. Moroccan rituals draw on ingredients such as argan oil, rose, almond, citrus, and traditional hammam techniques. Outside, a 45-metre lagoon-facing pool gives proper swimmers room to move, while yoga, personal training, and padel add more active options.

Oualidia gives you sheltered lagoon water and open Atlantic conditions within the same landscape. Surf lessons are available for beginners and children from age six, while more experienced surfers can head to stronger Atlantic breaks nearby. Paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, horse riding, cycling, and guided birdwatching can all be arranged, with many outings starting from the hotel's jetty.

La Sultana Oualidia is Green Key certified, with environmental measures that are unusually visible around the hotel. Grey water from showers and kitchens is treated and reused for irrigation, wastewater is processed through planted underground systems, and still and sparkling water is filtered and bottled on site in glass. The organic garden is grown without chemical fertilisers, waste is sorted for recycling, and the hotel also runs beach and lagoon clean-ups and a small bird infirmary with help from a local vet. The complimentary Fauna, Flora & Sustainability tour takes guests into the greenhouse, palm plantation, vegetable garden, and lagoon ecosystem to see more of this work first-hand.

The emphasis here is on doing things together. Younger guests can join a complimentary garden session with the gardener, pick vegetables, and have the kitchen cook what they've collected for lunch. Surf lessons start from age six, while paddleboarding, birdwatching, boat trips, and the lagoon give older children plenty to get involved in. A Panorama Suite sleeps two adults and one child, while a Lagoon Suite can take two adults and two children.
