There's more than one way to do a Moroccan beach holiday. Go big on beach time in Agadir, take a front-row seat for the surfers in Taghazout or make Oualidia your spot for seafood and seaside downtime. And then there's Essaouira, a wonderfully windswept town with a bohemian soul. 

Agadir is Morocco's most resort-minded city, with a broad crescent of sand, a seafront promenade and hotels built around pools, gardens and spas. Head inland to browse the 6,000-plus shops of Souk El Had or take the cable car to Agadir Oufella for sweeping views across the bay. 

Taghazout sits around half an hour north of Agadir, where fishing boats rest beside the water and boards stacked outside cafés show how thoroughly surf culture has become part of village life. Watch the famous breaks at Anchor Point, try yoga overlooking the ocean or slip into a steamy hammam for a black soap body scrub. For a little more resort-style luxury, Taghazout Bay has bigger hotels, sparkling pools and the beach on your doorstep. 

Oualidia curves around a long tidal lagoon, sheltered from the open ocean by a sandbank. Take to the calm waters by kayak, take a sunset cruise beneath a peach-pink sky then tuck into locally farmed oysters beside the shore. Depending on the season, you might spot flamingos among the visiting waterbirds. 

Essaouira is all cannon-lined ramparts, gulls wheeling over the harbour and salty Atlantic air. Wander the compact medina's workshops, galleries and cafés, soak up the hypotonic sounds of traditional Gnawa music or watch kitesurfers skim across the bay.
