Rooftop swims, Atlantic views, and old Essaouira just outside the door
Essaouira is bright, breezy, and sea salted. Heure Bleue Palais is richer and more cocooning, with dark timber, burnished leather, jewel toned rugs, and a palm filled courtyard tucked just inside Bab Marrakech. Once the home of a local pasha, it has been restored as a 33 room Relais & Châteaux hotel, with African, Moroccan, Portuguese, and British influences woven through the interiors. When you climb to the roof, the coast comes rushing back in. There’s a heated pool, terracotta terraces, and the Atlantic stretching beyond the medina rooftops.
Why we love Heure Bleue Palais
-
Climb above the enclosed medina and suddenly there’s sky, ocean, and old Essaouira below you, with a heated rooftop pool for year-round swims.
-
Bab Marrakech puts you straight into the old city, with the harbour, beach, galleries, cafés, and ramparts all within walking distance.
-
Breakfast makes good use of the courtyard setting, with Moroccan breads and pancakes, amlou (a rich almond, argan oil, and honey spread), local honey, fruit, yoghurt, eggs, and Essaouira smoked salmon.
-
Inside, the mood is richer than Essaouira’s blue-and-white streets. Carved wood, leather, rugs, coloured glass, fireplaces, and Moroccan, African, Portuguese, and British influences give the hotel its distinctive character.
Facilities
Mornings belong to the courtyard. Lunch heads upstairs to the roof. By dinner, the mood turns richer again in the Moroccan salon downstairs. The kitchen makes the most of being on the Atlantic, with Essaouira fish and seafood alongside argan oil, local honey, goat’s cheese, sardines, and seasonal produce. And when a full dinner feels unnecessary, the English Bar has Moroccan kemia and a fireplace waiting instead.
Le Salon Oriental
An intimate Moroccan dining room for dinner, with Chef Ahmed Handour bringing local ingredients, seafood, and modern touches to traditional Moroccan cooking.
Le SAMA
Lunch on the rooftop beside the pool, with sea views and a lighter menu focused on fish, seafood, and daily specials.
English Lounge
Leather chairs, dark wood, Oriental rugs, a piano, and a fireplace give the bar its old club atmosphere. From early evening, add freshly prepared kemia, Moroccan wine, or a cocktail.

P’tit Spa is exactly that: intimate, atmospheric, and easy to fit into a day exploring Essaouira. The traditional hammam is finished in black tadelakt, with two softly lit treatment rooms alongside. The Sultan Ritual starts with eucalyptus scented black soap, followed by exfoliation, a rhassoul clay wrap, and an argan oil massage. Shorter hammam scrubs are available too, along with massages and facials using ingredients such as prickly pear, rose, aloe, and argan.
Heure Bleue Palais has held Green Key certification since 2015. Measures include LED lighting, lower water use, less frequent linen changes, local and organic purchasing, and watering the courtyard early in the day to reduce evaporation. The hotel also supports El Khir, an Essaouira association working with women facing difficult circumstances.
There’s no kids’ club, but Heure Bleue has plenty of practical touches for families who want to explore Essaouira together. Cots, connecting rooms, babysitting, highchairs, children’s menus, early dinners, and pushchairs can all be arranged. The Family Suite makes longer stays easier, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a large shared living room. The heated rooftop pool gives everyone somewhere to regroup between the beach and medina.
