• Luxury travel firm Kuoni reports increase in honeymoon enquiries

Honeymoons are back on the map for thousands of couples, with luxury travel company Kuoni reporting its had a strong upswing in honeymoon enquiries since last weekend.

With news that weddings and civil partnerships of up to 30 people are allowed to take place in England alongside an easing of travel restrictions means couples are now keen to plan their dream trip away.

New enquiries over the past week were at their highest level since lockdown and Kuoni has seen thousands of honeymoon searches online over the past few days.

About 73,600 weddings and same-sex civil partnership ceremonies were postponed according to the Office for National Statistics.

Alongside that, many thousands of honeymoon plans have also been thrown into disarray.

Over the past three months Kuoni has helped couples throughout the UK re-arrange their honeymoon plans and cancelling trips of a lifetime.

But following news that the FCO travel advice and quarantine measures have been dropped for some safe “corridors”, interest is growing in luxury short breaks in Europe and the UK as couples seek an immediate post-nuptial escape.

Kuoni has seem more couples asking about luxury “minimoon” escape this year, followed by a big long-haul adventure for travel in 2021 or 2022, with many hotels keen to entice couples with added-value upgrade offers.

Derek Jones, CEO of Kuoni, said: “Weddings are now back on albeit in a smaller way for now - and so is the honeymoon as couples start to re-organise their special day.  Alongside that we’re helping more and more couples each week plan what is essentially the most important holiday of their lifetime and the past week has shown a clear upswing in demand and a renewed confidence to go ahead and book.”

“With smaller weddings of up to 30 possible in England this year, we’ve had couples come to us looking for a short escape this year to places including Spain, Italy and Greece, and deciding that they’ll do their “big trip” later and make it bigger and better than ever.”

Kuoni reports that many couples are upgrading their honeymoon plans for next year and even the year after, with many couples saying that they will now have longer to save and are either extending their stay, with multiple centre destinations,  upgrading their accommodation to luxury pool villas and adding experiences such as balloon trips over the Maasai Mara, private champagne picnics on deserted islands or overnight stay in an Africa treehouse.

Most popular long-haul destinations for 2021 honeymoons are:

1. The Maldives
2. Sri Lanka
3. Mauritius
4. Kenya & Tanzania
5. South Africa

And for mini-moon escapes this year:

  1. Italy
  2. Greece
  3. Spain
