Take a guided city tour of Shanghai, where highlights include the Old Town, the 16th-Century Yu Garden and the French Concession. Take a stroll along the Bund waterfront before a private river cruise. Stay: Central Hotel Shanghai (or similar).
Day 17 Shanghai to Xi’an
Transfer to the airport after breakfast for your flight to Xi’an. On arrival, explore the city’s Muslim Quarter and its market. Stay: Grand Mercure Xi’an on Renmin Square (or similar).
Day 18 Xi’an
You’ll arrive just as the doors open to see the Terracotta Warriors, and have the chance to meet an archaeologist. Then visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and learn how to make dumplings in a hands-on class. Catch a Tang Dynasty Show this evening. Stay: Grand Mercure Xi’an on Renmin Square (or similar).
Day 19 Xi’an to Beijing
Take a first-class, high-speed scenic train journey to Beijing. Transfer to your hotel on arrival and enjoy a classic Peking duck dinner. Stay: Park Plaza Wangfujing (or similar).
Days 20-21 Beijing
See the capital’s sights, Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Take part in a t’ai chi lesson and go on a boat ride at the Summer Palace (weather permitting). Visit the Great Wall of China’s Mutianyu section this afternoon, after the crowds have left. Stay: Park Plaza Wangfujing (or similar).
Day 22 Beijing
Transfer to the airport for your return overnight flight to the UK.
