Visiting the Terracotta Warriors

Managing Director at Asian Trails, Alfred&'s partners in China

Recognised as one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world, it’s no surprise how many people come to see the Terracotta Warriors each day. We start bright and early and arrive at the UNESCO site before the crowds in our trusty vintage jeep. It makes such a difference being able to get that bit closer and fully appreciate the craftsmanship and history of the place. It also gives you the rest of the day to see what else Xi’an has to offer!

Our local insiders are warrior experts and know the site like the back of their hands. You’ll be so grateful to have someone with you as they navigate the vaults, answering all your questions and giving you as much of a history lesson as you would like. Having explored to your heart’s content, we get back on the road and pay a visit to the Loess plateau before grabbing some world-famous Shaanxi cuisine. During all our trips we try to show our guests the landmark sites, but we also want to give them some insights into the country they’re visiting so perhaps we’ll stop and have a game of ‘tou luo’ or enjoy a cup of tea together in between.

We like to end this day out with a beautiful drive up into the mountains to a charming 2000-year-old temple where locals believe mankind was born. It’s a really full day but definitely one you’ll remember.

Alfred & Xiaolin Zhang

Xiaolin is the managing director of Asian Trails, our partners in China who look after our customers once they've arrived. Based in Beijing, Xiaolin has been with Asian Trails for over 10 years and has been country manager since 2016. Fluent in both English and French, Xiaolin loves to share her deep knowledge of her home country with visitors from around the world, helping them build extraordinary itineraries to places they perhaps would not otherwise visit. With a keen interest in both Chinese history and art, when she's not tailoring trips for her guests you'll find her immersed in books and visiting ancient landmarks and galleries.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Suzanne, who's travelled extensively in China. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the guides who can take you to The Great Wall’s quietest spots, the villagers who can show you how to create your own lucky clay cat and the cooks who can rustle you up breakfast pancakes, Shanghai-style.
