Relive Udaipur’s royal past from The Oberoi Udaivilas

By default, we treat you like a maharaja…

By Mr. Ankush Mahajan
General Manager at The Oberoi Udaivilas

I’ve worked for The Oberoi Hotels and Resorts for many years but the Oberoi Udaivilas, on the banks of romantic Lake Pichola, just adds that something special. For a start, this property took almost five-and-a-half years to construct what feels like an old-world palace. The pumpkin domes, glossy araish work (a luxurious marble effect), gold leaf detail and frescoes depicting Udaipur’s scenes is craftsmanship that you really only expect to see in Rajasthan’s palaces and forts. We even have a candle room with more than 70,000 tiny mirrors illuminating the dark. You see this all on a heritage tour, an exclusive experience for our guests.

The entire property is spread over 30 acres with a long garden swimming pool anchoring rooms. The three room categories incorporate lashings of Rajasthani colours and Victorian-style bathtubs with some enjoying private pools, semi-private pools and views of the lake. You can absorb the epic scale while an ornately canopied boat picks you up from the jetty and sails you across the lake to our grand entrance. I always tell guests, ‘this is the trailer, now we’ll showcase the movie.’ From then, we attempt to pamper you throughout from our traditional royal welcome and our spa featuring a lake-facing outdoor pool, all the way to our tailormade cocktails infused perhaps with plucked blackcurrants or an Indian gooseberry compote.

People are predominately drawn to Chandni restaurant for dinner under the stars and views of a moonlit lake. Or Udaimahal for fine dining local delicacies such as thalis and aromatic lamb marinated overnight. The pièce de résistance though is our highly adaptive service. One time, a lady lost her watch so a staff member bought a replacement for her on his lunch break. Another time, a team member prepared a herb-infused foot bath for a guest simply because she mentioned her feet were sore from all the sightseeing. Like our founding chairman, Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, would always say, ‘ you can make hotels of gold but in the end what matters are the people who work there and how they treat their guests.’
