Nostalgia brooding on the harbour at Brunton Boatyard

People always think this a colonial-era mansion but in fact we’re only 24 years old …

By Poonam Singh Veliath
Hospitality industry expert at CGH Earth

Believe it or not, our hotel was originally a boatyard. Back in the day, Kochi was an important port city on the Old Spice Route that absorbed a melting pot of different cultures over time. The boatyard itself was built during the British rule by George Brunton and Sons, one of the most prestigious shipbuilders of their time. In an area that evokes such significant historical memories, we are privileged to be situated in the most beautiful spot facing the water. Our sunset cruises make the most of the glorious views of drifting boats and Kochi’s famous Chinese nets silhouetted at dusk.

We’re within striking distance of all the landmarks; the 400-year-old Paradesi Synagogue, St Francis Church where the famous Portuguese explorer, Vasco de Gama, was originally buried, and many beautiful mosques which you can explore on foot or on our e-bikes. There’s so much on offer whether you’re an art lover or an avid historian.

After days out, with just 26 rooms, it feels like returning home rather than to a hotel – there’s nothing shiny, everything is very natural looking. Being part of the CGH Earth portfolio, all our hotels have this earthy ambience with a sustainable ethos at their heart. Architecture wise we try to preserve Fort Kochi’s history with Portuguese, Dutch, British and Keralan influences. Think terracotta floors, white facades and high ceilings with thatched roofs. People can’t believe it’s not a colonial heritage building!

Even our cuisine nods to Kochi’s swirl of different cultures. My favourite is this coconut-based stew made either with vegetables, meat or fish accompanied by some nice appams – light and fluffy rice pancakes. Then there’s a delightful high tea we serve out on the terrace full of British nostalgia. Right next to that is our beautiful pool on the water’s edge. Nowhere else in the city can you take a swim while watching the ships sail by.
