Admire the mountains from the terrace while you sip on cherry brandy…
We’ll take you up into the hills where you’ll find our traditional farmhouse nestled in Pelling’s countryside. Other than the acres of rolling fields, on a clear day you can see all the way to the snow-capped Kanchenjunga mountains which you can admire from the terrace while you sip on cherry brandy or chang (Sikkimese local beer). The beer comes in these large bamboo vessels in which we add hot water to release the unique flavours. It’s quite delicious.
Around the lawn you’ll meet my family members; my wife, mother, grandmother, brother, my brother’s wife – whoever is around. Then we’ll take you to the kitchen where all the seasonal vegetables have been picked from the kitchen garden such as cabbage, onions, radishes and chillies. You can either help cook or leave it to us, it’s up to you. Whatever you choose you’ll be in the company of the whole family listening to stories of village life in Sikkim.
My wife is a very good cook and uses old Nepali family recipes to make momo dumplings that come steamed or fried or gyathuk, a warming winter staple consisting of homemade noodle soup with chicken and spinach. Hand dexterity is very important when it comes to making momos – you have to have a certain touch and we use different types of ingredients to make our way of cooking them extra special.
We serve lunch on huge traditional platters with lots of different dishes presented to you outside on the lawn. Aside from momos and gyathuk, you could have nettle soup, fern with cottage cheese, chicken or pork accompanied with radishes and fermented spinach and rice.
Some guests have stayed up to four hours just chatting with the family over momos and chang. You’ll have fun even if you don’t consider yourself the best cook.
