Mysore is known as a heritage city, and the Metropole is very much a part of that heritage. It was originally built in 1920 by the Maharaja of Mysore as a place to stay for his most important British guests, and it still has that colonial look and feel. Despite the central location, within walking distance of Mysore Palace, it’s very peaceful. We’re lucky enough to have two-and-a-half acres of beautifully landscaped grounds filled with 100-year-old trees, which the birds love, so there’s a real sense of space.
It’s a boutique property with just 30 rooms, all of which have a private balcony overlooking the central courtyard. They’re built on a generous scale, with high ceilings, arches and so on, but obviously we’ve added all the modern facilities that our guests could require. That applies to the rest of the property as well. You have the colonial architecture – the columns, arcades and galleries – but there’s also a swimming pool, a well-equipped gym and, from September 2022, a spa.
When it comes to eating, the Metropole is well known for its food. Shikari is our open-air multi-cuisine restaurant, which is only open in the evenings and is a popular spot for kebabs straight from the grill. It’s in the courtyard, surrounded by trees, and has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Inside, in a historic setting, Tiger Trail serves breakfast and lunch, and there’s also a bar and a 24-hour coffee shop.
The hotel has won a lot of awards since it opened almost 20 years ago, and a lot of that is down to the service. I’m proud of the fact that more than half of the staff – most of who are from Mysore – have been here since the beginning. It helps to create a feeling of belongingness that all adds to the Metropole’s old-world charm.
