Explore the different sides of Amritsar, from its Sikh monuments to colonial history, ending with lunch at a local’s home. We start early, heading to the Golden Temple at 4am, which is the most important Sikh shrine in India. To put it into perspective, the temple receives about 200,000 visitors a day. At that time of the morning, the Gurbani – the reading of the sacred Sikh text to song – is in session, which is so beautiful it often reduces visitors to tears.
At the temple, your storyteller guide will talk about philosophy, architecture, history and Sikhism. There’s even a chance to help out in the community kitchen; visitors enjoy preparing and serving food with the locals. Before you leave, you’ll have a light breakfast to charge you up for the walk around Amritsar, where you’ll visit markets and hidden architectural gems. Learn about the history of India’s oldest planned city, its Sikh gurus and formidable maharajas. You’ll also confront the history of the British occupation at the Jallianwala Bagh, site of the notorious 1919 massacre and a milestone in the Indian Freedom Movement.
At the end of the walk, you’ll sit down with a family for chai and a Punjabi meal. If you like, you can even visit the market to shop for vegetables and spices or do some kite flying on the rooftop. We work with three families, one of which belongs to your guide, Tarun Deep Singh, who is a Sikh and marketing professor at the University. You get a warm welcome and can enjoy your lunch while chatting about everything from religion to history. Guests love that family connection, it really makes them feel part of Amritsar.
