Claridges: where luxury reigns supreme

We’ll customise your stay without you even knowing…

By Vikram Aditya Singh
Chief Executive Officer, Claridges Hotels & Resorts

The Claridges in New Delhi is steeped in history. It’s located right in the heart of the city with all of Delhi’s monuments right on our doorstep. Tell me something we’re not close to! We pride ourselves on hospitality from the heart with some of our employees having been with us for as long as 30 years.

The secret to our service is that we’ll customise your stay without you even knowing. If you want the pampering for which we’re famous, there’ll be people following you around with cushions and glasses of champagne, but if you’re say Tom Cruise and check in as Jerry Maguire, that’s cool with us too. We can be as discreet as you wish – something that admittedly can be hard for us Indians!

The rooms are timelessly elegant, but we just keep evolving . The beauty of Claridges is that it will always be relevant. I always describe it as the palace of tomorrow. If you ask me what my favourite room is, I haven’t made it yet, although the current ones are next level; some are very George V style with chandeliers, others evocative of the 50s and 60s but completely refreshed. No matter what, each of the 130 rooms are different. We’re also hi-tech. There’s not just one but two 65-inch televisions in the rooms so you don’t have to crook your neck when watching TV. As far as relaxing goes, there’s a manicured garden which feels more like a private club with pavilions dotted around as well as a 4,000 square foot spa.

We’ve expanded our palette to accommodate every taste from a bakery cooking fresh baguettes and pastries to an elegant Mediterranean restaurant where you can dine Spanish style on a terrace. In Dhaba, our Indian restaurant, there’s this fabulous dish which is a favourite of mine; lamb shank mutton curry cooked subtly with spices. The complete menu is now available for everyone 24 hours a day so if you’re arriving after say a 9pm flight you won’t be disappointed. I did this because it’s not very luxurious to say, ‘sorry sir the breakfast has closed.’ The only thing we’re strict on is the war I’m waging on plastic. You can either have our own glass with bottled sparkling or still water or a plastic one for 15,000 rupees.
