Behind the scenes in the faming foothills of Xi'an

So much is packed into this authentic tour which gives you the chance to discover the real life and culture in the outskirts of Xi’an. We step outside the city, away from the buzz of the Terracotta Warriors and head south in a comfortable vintage jeep and explore the farming foothills and local villages. There are so many hidden gems to discover and we can’t wait to share them with you.

At the foot of Mount Guifeng you can soak up some incredible views before we start our adventure at the famous Buddhist temple of Caotang which is around 1600 years old and one of the cradles of the School of Three Treatise. Everything about this tour is focused on showcasing a genuine and smaller part of China that you might not otherwise experience so as we drive further into the hills we stop for lunch in a local village restaurant for a typical lunch and conversation with the local people.

Tailor-made to your own interests, there are multiple options when embarking on this tour. We can stop off at a traditional distillery and taste some baijiu, a spirit that’s been made in China for over 5,000 years. As the country’s national drink, you must try it once! We can also stop off at a traditional paper-making workshop and meet with the talented craftsmen before exploring a village that dates back to the Ming dynasty. Away from the tourist crowds, joined by your own personal insider, this is a beautiful way to catch a glimpse of real China.

Xiaolin is the managing director of Asian Trails, our partners in China who look after our customers once they've arrived. Based in Beijing, Xiaolin has been with Asian Trails for over 10 years and has been country manager since 2016. Fluent in both English and French, Xiaolin loves to share her deep knowledge of her home country with visitors from around the world, helping them build extraordinary itineraries to places they perhaps would not otherwise visit. With a keen interest in both Chinese history and art, when she's not tailoring trips for her guests you'll find her immersed in books and visiting ancient landmarks and galleries.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Suzanne, who's travelled extensively in China. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the guides who can take you to The Great Wall’s quietest spots, the villagers who can show you how to create your own lucky clay cat and the cooks who can rustle you up breakfast pancakes, Shanghai-style.
