There’s no other property in Jodhpur like The Rohet House, it’s a design masterpiece renowned for Mughal-style street food…
The Rohet House is our 400-year-old ancestral home in Jodhpur that we’ve converted into a luxury boutique hotel. I grew up here and remember my grandparents, who come from aristocratic lineage, always entertaining with lavish parties. We wanted to continue that tradition by opening the house up to guests. There’s no other property in Jodhpur like The Rohet House. It’s a design masterpiece with a restaurant renowned for offering Mughal-style street food in a fine-dining setting, such as our burgers made of shredded meat.
My mother, Thakurani Rashmi Singh, was the mastermind behind the property’s urban Rajasthan design, which has a very modern, arty feel. Originally an Art Deco property built by my grandparents in 1969 from sandstone and red ochre, my mother has refurbished the house to pay homage to Indian culture. The paintings were created by local artists, there’s a traditional colour palette and locally-sourced furniture. The underlying theme is Krishna – there’s no imagery of him anywhere but intricate hand-painted murals and motifs tell stories about him.
The house is set in an affluent neighbourhood of Jodhpur, Ratanada, surrounded by tropical gardens filled with flowers; there’s a 50-foot pool and a veranda where you can have a drink or meal. This is a peaceful, adult-only property with a sense of privacy and luxury, there are just two rooms on the ground floor overlooking the garden and six suites upstairs which have terraces. When we’re at the property, we like to invite guests into our lounge to have a drink with us; there are antiques and photos on the walls that tell the story of our family history.
We’ve had some fantastic feedback from guests at The Rohet House. They love the design and the quality that flows from the flooring to the plush linens and our food, which features dishes from royal kitchens and traditional family recipes. We also like to arrange walks into the old city for guests, temple visits to watch morning prayers and street food breakfasts. Another highlight is our sustainability and corporate responsibility; aside from installing solar water heaters, we help the local community by supporting a non-profit organisation that funds medical care.
