The Imperial is one of Delhi’s oldest and most iconic hotels. Planted in the centre of the capital on famous Janpath, our location is just fantastic – we’re surrounded by eight acres of green, landscaped gardens with a driveway lined by palm trees. The hotel dates back to the 1930s and is woven with India’s colonial history. It was designed by Blomfield as part of British architect Edwin Lutyens’s upscale Delhi neighbourhood and is a mix of Art Deco, Victorian and colonial style. Back in the day, people like Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten met here to discuss Indian politics and the creation of Pakistan.
The bones of the building and its 235 rooms have remained the same but we’ve given it a complete facelift, refurbishing everything from the marble floors to teak furniture from Burma and the chandeliers in our ballroom. Today, we’re an award-winning five-star hotel loved for its history and Raj-era ambience. We’ve also added modern amenities like a spa, salon, Olympic-sized pool and squash court. During festivals like Holi and Diwali we like to host celebrations at the Imperial and we even have a women-only wing on the third floor.
There are over 5,000 pieces of art in the hotel including lithographs and original photos of Delhi, which you can explore on our art history tour of the hotel. The Daniell’s Tavern is in fact named after the British landscape artists Thomas and William Daniell, who passed through India in 1786. Then we have five restaurants; 1911 celebrates the year that New Delhi became the capital and has amazing Raj-era décor. The Spice Route has been the talk of the town since it opened and serves exceptional South-East Asian cuisine, especially seafood, and was named by Condé Nast as one of the top ten restaurants in India.
What’s special about The Imperial is that we’re a standalone property, we’re not part of a chain of hotels and we have a unique history and personal touch, that’s what guests love and many have been coming here for decades. No hotel can be successful though without great people and I take immense pride in my team; some who’ve worked here for up to 50 years and always go the extra mile. I have a chef called Joseph, for example, who works the breakfast shift and he always remembers how guests like their eggs.
