Meet the young monks dressed in colours that represent fire…
We start this half day at the Pemayangtse Monastery dating back to 1705. It’s spread over three floors and adorned with statues, paintings, and colourfully decorated doors. At the top sits a beautiful wooden carving called, Sandhokpalri, otherwise known as Guru Rimpoche’s heavenly abode – the man who founded Tibetan Buddhism. Around the monastery you can also meet young monks dressed in red and maroon colours that represent fire and watch them chant mantras and recite the alphabet.
The next part of this excursion leads to Rabdentse, the second capital of Sikkim which was destroyed by an invading Nepalese army many years ago. You can still see the remains of the city at the end of a mossy footpath. It’s a 15-minute walk or so and beautiful if the weather’s nice with a jungle background and clouds not too far away. It’s also regarded as a pilgrimage for Buddhists. There are three holy chortens built where the first kings of Sikkim prayed to their gods, as well as the remains of a stone throne and the royal residences. Nothing is roped off or out of bounds which allows for great freedom of viewing.
