Things to do in India

A haveli-style hotel with royal flair

My parents gave it that personal touch from the hand-painted frescoes to beautiful latticework…

By Kunwar Adhiraj Sing Shahpura
Director at Shahpura Hotels

Converted from a once palatial residence, Shahpura House was founded by my mother and father in 1990 as a small guest house with only three bedrooms. Today it encompasses 65 rooms all uniquely designed. My parents added that personal touch and boutique style seen throughout; the elaborate tapestries, hand-painted frescoes and opulent mirror work that my mother oversaw while my father concentrated on the architecture like the haveli-style lattices and courtyards. As we expanded, my brother and I tried to continue the tradition of maintaining the splendid Rajasthani heritage. The staff who have been with us for around 15 years love reminding us of when we were small children and were constantly scolded for messing about behind the front desk!

The hotel is located close to the city centre in a quieter residential area. When you want to take respite after days of exploring, we have an outdoor pool and a small spa opposite offering manicures, pedicures with three treatment rooms. You can see Nahargarh Fort from our 5th floor al fresco restaurant, Rasa, specialising in Indian and Rajasthani cuisine. Or you can choose to dine on the ground floor restaurant, Sapphire, an opulent marbled space with pool views. We’re quite famous for our palak patta chaat – spinach fritter again created by my mother. Afterwards you can have a drink at the bar complete with a billiards table.

We’re known for our trademark experiences such as cooking classes learning to make dishes including laal maas (lamb curry), tarkari (vegetarian) and halua, a delicious winter pudding made with carrot. During Holi, Diwali and Gangaur festivals we make sure the guests celebrate with the family joining in the prayers, dances and feasts. We also have a boutique called Shahpura Collection, a pride and joy with products tailored by ladies from underprivileged rural backgrounds. We trained them in block print and embroidery with the hope of empowering them. You don’t have to go far for the perfect souvenir.
