Tailor-made Yangtze River Holidays

The Yangtze River is an ideal location for a cruise, boasting spectacular canyons with bright emerald water and a tranquility so rarely found in modern life. But there’s much more to this region than its undeniable beauty. The longest river in Asia, the Yangtze is central to China and its history and is also one of the longest inhabited regions in the country. Stretching from a glacier along the border of Tibet, all the way down to Shanghai, the people here are as wonderfully diverse as the landscape.

In the upper basin, you’ll find ethnic Tibetans farming in the highlands while further down the river many Chinese (Han) minorities can be found herding and hunting. Fishing is an obvious livelihood for those living on the banks of the Yangtze, and it’s a delight to hear the whistle of the fishermen’s song as you pass each other on the water.

Explore the UNESCO recognised Naxi minority village at the first bend of the river, be captivated by the 2000-year-old hanging coffins at the Lesser Three Gorges while you discover ancient funeral customs or simply wander the streets of quaint water towns in the lower basin. Get in touch with our team of China experts to help you navigate this epic river overflowing with history.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Suzanne, who's travelled extensively in China. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the guides who can take you to The Great Wall’s quietest spots, the villagers who can show you how to create your own lucky clay cat and the cooks who can rustle you up breakfast pancakes, Shanghai-style.
