Breakfast with the locals in Shanghai

Food is at the heart of everything in China and plays a huge part in our daily lives. While forgotten by many, breakfast is actually one of the most important meals of the day for us and during this tour in Old Shanghai, we not only share some of our favourite dishes with you, we invite you into some of Shanghai’s oldest communities to get a real taste of local life.

During this gentle walking tour, we take you further into Old Shanghai where we watch some of China’s most popular breakfast items being prepared and eat them alongside the locals. We do love a hearty breakfast, so you’ll have plenty of energy for exploring the rest of the day and if you like pancakes you’re in for a treat! Although ours are fried with beef instead of being served with syrup or sugar!

From family run shops selling local delicacies to wet markets and street vendors, this action-packed tour gives you a real sense of the culture here in Shanghai. This isn’t an area frequented by tourists and this authentic experience will give you some genuine insights into daily life behind the scenes and the opportunity to taste the best jianbing in Shanghai.

Having sparked an affectionate relationship with China, Simone has mastered the Chinese language to a fluent level and is proud to call the world's largest country home. In his spare time, he enjoys diving deep into the world of ancient religions and philosophies as well keeping his advanced scuba skills up to date.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Suzanne, who's travelled extensively in China. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the guides who can take you to The Great Wall’s quietest spots, the villagers who can show you how to create your own lucky clay cat and the cooks who can rustle you up breakfast pancakes, Shanghai-style.
