Low key hotel surrounded by a superb garden
There were only 4 out of 166 rooms occupied during our stay, and this is really a shame. It is surrounded by well maintained gardens with lush greenery. Great service. Good breakfast. Easy location to visit Funchal and surroundings. The rooms are a bit old fashioned and from that perspective it is a "low 4 star".
We stayed here for 6 days and had a wonderful time. We took a studio with a kitchenette, small front garden and breathing view from the room on two sides. Can not understand why people would take a more expensive, smaller double room! The Botanical Garden was very nice accompanied by birds song. The service was also at a high level.
We spent a week in this hotel in December. We deliberately chose this hotel because of its garden as we did not want to spend much time in a tower block in case of positive PCR test. Fortunately it was negative. So what we liked in this hotel: -as I've already mentioned the garden. It is really splendid. On par with botanical gardens in Funchal; -lovely view from almost everywhere; -not very touristy and busy surroundings, but a supermarket, bakery, bus stop and lovely restaurants are nearby; -very comfortable bed; -spacious apartment with plenty of storage. What we did not like. Not a lot actually: - average breakfast with chaotic service; We had dinner only once on the day of arrival. It was average as well; -poor quality of the towels, but they were changed frequently; - we were not impressed with the reception staff; - we never stayed in a hotel, where tee/coffee were not provided. I think such things need to be available especially now, when people are awaiting for their tests. Overall it is a lovely place. I hope other people will be able enjoy it soon.
The Ideal Hotel
The Quinta Splendida is situated in an ideal location close to the small town of Canico in the south east of the island. The hotel is close to a bakery, supermarket, bars and restaurants. It is has a bus stop to Funchal outside and there are further buses allowing you to explore the east of the island from the centre of Canico. It is set up high overlooking the sea. A 25 minute walk takes you to the seafront, but it is a steep climb back up, but there is a bus if you need one. We stayed in one of the Spa rooms, which was enormous, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. There was a large balcony with sun loungers and a table and chairs. We liked the underfloor heating, which made the room comfortable in the evenings in December. Breakfast was extensive and all the staff in the dining room were very good. We especially liked Rosa and Monica, who were always cheerful. We ate at the hotel a few times and the food was excellent. Reception were very helpful, going out of their way to help us. They booked walking tours for us and supplied us with information about buses and the local area. Nothing was too much trouble. Out holiday was cut short by a day, due to Covid restrictions and the hotel refunded this money. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and we hope to return once restrictions have been lifted.
Lovely Christmas Lunch during difficult times!
We had a lovely Christmas lunch here! These are challenging times when one's job has become more complicated. Our experience revealed how seriously the staff has taken their job of providing exquisite service! The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the luncheon perfect! Thank you for the special day you created for us!
