Some hotels stay with you because they’re lovely. Others because they look like nowhere else. The Villa Bentota is both. This 14-room, 19th-century heritage property on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast was transformed by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most celebrated architect, into an early boutique hotel. Inside: antique four-poster beds and jewel-coloured sofas. Outside: tangerine parasols, immaculate lawns and two pools.
Our favourite bit? The Colombo–Galle railway at the end of the garden. Staff help you across the tracks to access the beach, with the Indian Ocean waiting just beyond. The occasional train whistle from your sun lounger? All part of the architecture. The Suite is our couples’ pick. Families with older children look to the Bawa-designed Mohotti Suite, with two queen beds and a handy spot beside the children’s pool.

Make time for a visit to Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's former country estate. Part tropical garden, part living work of art, it's a fascinating insight into the architect's world.
Rooms
14 rooms, all different in design, mix antiques, artwork and four-poster beds with fabulous flashes of colour. The two-bed Mohotti Suite is a family favourite while the ocean-facing The Suite feels made for honeymooners.
Even the lead-in room is generously sized and is found across the ground and first floors.

Geoffrey Bawa's showpiece. A timber-panelled pavilion with two four-poster queen bedrooms and a setting beside the children's pool. There are steep stairs to reach it, but the signature villa experience is worth the climb.

Facilities
The Villa Bentota by KK Collection puts Sri Lanka firmly on the plate, from coconut and crab to plenty of spice. Inguru handles the modern Sri Lankan feasts; Bawa’s Bar does cocktails and casual bites. And then someone mentions a private dinner on the beach.
