A former palace with a citrus courtyard, rooftop views, and cookery classes that can begin in the souks.
Palais Amani is a 21-room boutique palace just inside the walls of Fes el-Bali, close to the medina’s workshops, food stalls, madrasas, and tanneries. From the outside, the lane looks unremarkable. Inside, the courtyard is a different world. Step through the doors and there are mature citrus trees, aromatic plants, local flowers, and a central fountain fill an Andalusian garden, with birdsong and running water taking over from the commotion outside.
The look is old Fes with a 1920s plot twist. Moroccan zellige, traditional arches, and Iraqi stained-glass windows meet unusual Art Deco lines. A landslide damaged a large part of the palace in 1928, and the rebuilding that followed used modern techniques and the fashions of the time.
Closing the front door doesn’t mean leaving Fes behind. You can join a cooking class, explore the medina through its food, learn Arabic calligraphy, or take part in a Moroccan tea ceremony. Later, have a hammam, order a drink on the roof terrace, or eat Moroccan dishes beneath the courtyard’s citrus trees.
Why we love Palais Amani
-
You're inside the ancient medina, but less than 50 metres from the nearest car park, making arrivals unusually straightforward for Fes.
-
The citrus courtyard is more than scenery. You can have breakfast and dinner beneath the trees when the weather allows.
-
At the Fez Cooking School, some classes begin with shopping for ingredients in the souks before you start cooking.
-
With only 21 individually designed rooms and suites, the former palace still feels like a riad rather than a conventional city hotel.
Rooms
No two rooms at Palais Amani are exactly alike. Layouts, views, and architectural details vary throughout the historic building. Classic Rooms are the smallest, with low beams and limited views. For more space, step up to a Luxury Room. For a longer stay, choose a Junior Suite for its separate salon.
Facilities
Breakfast brings a taste of Morocco, with the likes of msemen and baghrir pancakes, honey, butter, and mint tea. Later, you can have dinner beneath the courtyard’s citrus trees, while summer brings the option of eating up on the roof terrace. The kitchen sources locally or elsewhere in Morocco wherever possible.
Eden
The main restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Menus can include Moroccan salads, briouates, pastilla, couscous, and tagines, alongside lighter dishes.
Rooftop Terrace Bar
Open in summer for drinks, light food, and views across the medina. Time it for the last of the light over Fes.
Salon Bar
An indoor bar with an open fireplace, local wines, cocktails, and single malts.
Les Bains Amani has a traditional hammam, exfoliation room, showers, and relaxation area. The Royal Hammam includes black soap, a thorough scrub, a body mask, and a wrap. Massages take place in rooms overlooking the garden and, during spring and autumn, may also be available beneath a tented pergola on the roof terrace.
The atmosphere and medina setting suit couples best, although Junior and Senior Suites can accommodate an additional guest. Senior Suites can sleep up to four with a rollaway bed.
