You can hear the sounds of the animals coming through the canvas and roll up the tent wall and breathe the air as if you’re in the forest…
The tented camp is very much a safari experience. There’s a limited fence for dangerous animals but it’s literally in the bush and it’s non electrified. It’s solar run and that’s very important; it allows us to keep the energy footprint low and you get the feeling that you really are in the bush and among nature. You can hear all the sounds of the nocturnal animals coming through the canvas. You can roll up the tent wall and literally breathe the air as if you’re in the forest.
Thanda sits on 14,000 hectares. It is access controlled – no day visitors, no self-drive. The extremely low footprint lends itself to the most incredible game sightings. You’re able to track elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion or cheetah for as many hours as you want. They’re very habituated which means they feel safe. All of the animals, even lion and elephant, can walk right past your vehicle and look you in the eye from all of a metre away. And some of the elephant are enormous. We have two massive tuskers and bulls that literally scrape past the game-drive vehicle.
Our guests love to spend time walking with the guides who are highly knowledgeable not just about the Zulu history and topography, which is incredible, but also about nature. You can be uninterrupted for hours unlike many game reserves where there’s a lot of traffic and you have to take it in turns to see the game.
We arrange all sorts of bush dinners, bush breakfasts or romantic set ups – I think we are the number one place for people getting engaged. It’s whatever you want. There’s no one size fits all.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Laura, who's travelled extensively in South Africa. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - ex banker who can show you the hottest foodie spots in Cape Town, the award-winning young sommelier who can introduce you to Stellenbosch's finest wines and the walking safari ranger who can guide you to the best game.
