Relax in the Namibian bush at Onguma Forest Camp

Our Forest Camp is nestled among tall trees in a lush riverine environment, complete with a waterhole that attracts all kinds of animals….

In the local Herero language, Onguma means “The place you don’t want to leave,” which perfectly describes our Forest Camp. The 11 thatched bungalows are nestled among tall trees in a lush riverine environment, complete with a waterhole that attracts all kinds of animals, from big cats to elephants and impalas. The surrounding Onguma Nature Reserve sprawls over 34,000 hectares and borders Fisher’s Pan and Etosha National Park – the location is just outstanding.

The Onguma group bought the camp, which was one of the original hotels in the area, in 1993 and has refurbished it into a collection of bungalows set on either side of the river. Design-wise, we went for a classic safari style with plenty of old-world charm; expect high, thatched roofs, wooden furniture and private verandas with peaceful bush views. Our honeymoon bungalow is spectacular, with a double hammock and an outdoor clawfoot bathtub.

At the heart of the camp, there’s a pool with a viewing deck that overlooks the waterhole, so you can spot wildlife even while you’re enjoying a swim. Food is an important part of the experience and we serve an African fusion menu under the stars, accompanied by fine wines from our extensive cellar. We offer game, such as kudu, on the menu every day – Namibians love red meats. We also grow our own fresh produce on a 500-acre vegetable farm, where we employ people from the local Oshivelo community.

Guests love being surrounded by wildlife. Onguma Forest Camp is unfenced, so any of the 30 different animal species we have on the reserve can wander by. We have a team of rangers who can take you on exciting game drives; you may even spot one of the endangered black rhinos that live here, protected by our anti-poaching team. For more incredible wildlife sightings, visit our Onkolo hide or take a guided walking safari – there’s no shortage of amazing animal encounters at Onguma.
