On the sweeping, wind battered coast of KwaZulu-Natal, you’ll find a rare sense of solitude by the churning waves. Miles away from modern day life where televisions would feel rather incongruous (perhaps even shoes) – you can quietly tune into the sounds of birds and the far-off chattering dolphins. The word isimangaliso, literally means ‘miracle’ in Zulu, and is a testament to the area’s natural beauty so stupendous it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status making up South Africa’s third-largest protected area. Spanning 280 kilometres along dramatic shoreline, it embodies a patchwork of vivid coral, milkwood forest, papyrus wetlands, savannah and endless, sandy beaches.
Natural spectacles are as predictable as the seasons. Prehistoric looking leatherback turtles drag themselves up the desolate sand to nest in the sheltering dunes (November to February). Offshore, migrating southern right whales and humpback whales breach the waters while deep below the surface lies dazzling kingdoms of coral reef housing multi-hued fish that flit and thrive virtually undisturbed. Behind this preserved paradise is a band of conservationists driven by passion and progressive ideas for sustainability. That and the local communities who have an ingrained respect for the surrounding land.
