Beautiful hotel, friendly staff
This is a very nice hotel. I had booked another accommodation that turned out to be a disaster and found this hotel the same day and immediately contacted them through Booking. They had a room available the same day, which was a relief. The hotel is very big, clean and has friendly and polite staff. The room was very nice, it was not a full sea view room but nonetheless we could see the sea from the side. The pools were quite cold but the pool at the spa is great. Not a big spa, but nice to relax. I had two massages and one facial treatment done and those were great too. Again, very friendly staff. The only thing that was 100% disappointing and very out of character was the restaurant. I ordered a meal and they brought me the wrong one, then they brought the one I ordered but it still didn’t seem like the one I ordered but it was fine with me since it was at least vegetarian. It was however the dullest vegetarian meal I’ve ever had. For the mistake they made they brought me a glass of wine (or champagne?) but I don’t drink alcohol. When I mentioned it they took it back. But didn’t offer anything else. No problem though, it was thoughtful of them to offer it at least. Afterwards they left a survey with the check. I thought that was funny because it was clear the answers wouldn’t be positive. I left it blank. This experience made me question to give three or four stars, but I decided on four. The bar at the outdoor pools has nice food. Too bad it closes in the evening. It was a disappointment that you had to pay for parking, but luckily there was always room to park. Breakfast is very nice. Good vegetarian options, it’s very clean(!) and the food is of great quality. My husband said it was the best hotel breakfast he had. As this review probably already shows this hotel has pros and cons. Generally, I really enjoyed my stay a lot and I will be back.
Stayed here for a week over Christmas, we just made it out of the UK a day before travel was restricted and I'm so glad we did. Had a great, relaxing break for 7 days, food was great, particularly from the show-cooking section. We had a sea view room which was amazing and also had one of the biggest beds we've seen in a hotel. Staff were amazing. The hotel was a little dark, I liked this but some of the older guests didn't appear to appreciate this. We went all inclusive and the only small gripe for me would be that the only bar open in the evening was The Fly bar which was a little small for the size of the hotel. Not sure if there are more options in peak season but it did get a little busy at times (although not overwhelmingly) so get in a little on the early side to get a table inside.
Relaxing Saccharum Calheta
A beautiful hotel set in the mountain side. Excellent staff, friendly, helpful and an asset to the Savoy chain. Nothing too much trouble, many staff going the extra mile. Hotel is designed to have a relaxing feel. We found it a bit too dark. Lots of mood lighting and smoked glass. Spa is wonderful, beautifully clean and well laid out. Fabulous food and the a la carte restaurant a must. Huge beds and our sea view room had an amazing view.
We stayed here for 2 weeks in the winter of 2020. The hotel is far enough from the centres or population to be less noisy and rough than Funchal and yet there are plenty of amenities nearby with a marina and restaurants, a supermarket and pharmacy just a short walk away. The hotel was a fantastic surprise. Built into the landscape rather than fighting against it, favouring living walls and roofs, muted colours and glass it is a very pleasant experience from outside. Inside the hotel is really very good - large open spaces, multiple bars and restaurants for every budget, outdoor and indoor pools, superb spa and gym, rooftop sun decks, plus more unique features like the chefs kitchen garden on the roof. The rooms are large, well appointed and the bored from sea view rooms is absolutely gorgeous. Staff are lovely and helpful. The toilet in the room is separated with a sliding dark glass door which might not provide the level of privacy needed by some but the facilities themselves - the rain shower and large sink / cupboard space / great balcony and large bed are great. We attended this hotel fully respecting the Madeira government rules and isolated for a short period before our tests were processed. Equally as important, the hotel respected the rules and required our tests results to be communicated to them for checking / before we were allowed to begin our vacation. Staff were rigorous in maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities and I commend their work. Excellent!!!!
First visit to Madeira - Not the last!!
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and safe. In the hotel we wore masks the whole time except when we were eating, drinking or sunbathing. Staff were very friendly and service was excellent. Could not find any fault with the food which was always hot and well cooked, with a good variety to choose from. Drinks of good quality (mostly local). Room was comfortable and spacious if a little dark as we did not have a sea view. Altogether a very restful and enjoyable holiday. we will definitely return to Madeira.
