A solid 4* but not 5*
For my final weekend on Madeira, I decided to stay somewhere a bit fancier, and chose The Vine partly because it was on my radar and partly because I got a very good rate from a hotel booking website. Although my room was showing signs of wear, it’s still quite a cool hotel with a great lobby (& bar) and rooftop pool (& bar). As usual in Madeira (I’m not sure if this is a covid-era thing), I had to ask for a kettle and an iron. Wifi was very good. Guests are allowed to use the gym next door, which is great, and far better than any gym you would find in most hotels. The hotel does many things very well, but I’d say that, overall, communication isn’t one of them! A few examples: - The entrance to the hotel is in a shopping centre, and not easy to spot, When I arrived by car, I drove past it and had to do a loop around to try again. Second time around, I spotted the hotel entrance but had no clue where to park. They say on site parking is available, but it’s a busy junction with a big taxi rank. So I ended up driving round again. Third time around, I spotted that there was a gap in the taxi rank for hotel guests to use. - I wanted to try the hotel’s restaurant, Uva, which happened to be promoting a fixed price menu (3 starters, 3 mains, 3 desserts, changes daily). I assumed this was in addition to the regular menu, but it isn’t. It’s their only offering. I only found out by chance, and it’s wasn’t really what I wanted. - The breakfast buffet was good, but I never really got to find out what I cooked to order items I could order. I learnt a little more each day. A menu would bed a great help. All in all, a nice stay. Not 5*, but a solid 4*.
Excellent location and value
The staff were incredible at this contemporary hotel in the center of town and connected to a high-end shopping mall. The rooftop infinity pool is also impressive for the view. The breakfast was also outstanding with excellent service. The only minor drawback is the very modern room could use a few tweaks. A few more electric plugs, hooks to hang towels and night tables were desperately needed. Also, the bathroom is not really private but fine for one person. Overall though a great hotel, especially since there is free, connected parking.
A gem in the heart of Funchal
From arrival to departure the hotel was truly fabulous. Staff could not do enough for us. The service, the food and the ambience all 5 star. The young sommelier chose wines each evening to complement dinner, allowing us to sample wines which we could not find back home. Rooftop pool area a lovely relaxing place with perfect soft music in the background. All in all nothing was too much trouble.
The staff make this hotel!
We have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions over the last few years. Our most recent stay was excellent considering the Covid times we find ourselves in! The hotel took so many extra safety measures that we felt completely safe. Of course some of the changes meant that some aspects of our stay were not as pleasurable as they were during previous visits but we are living in difficult times and safety is paramount! The staff really impressed us - they have always been good here but with all the extra measures they have had to endure, including mask wearing for long periods of time in the heat, we would have forgiven them if they were a little less fabulous but they were better than ever! Well done The Vine - we will be back very soon!
Absolutely loved this hotel! True perfection.
Everything about this hotel is perfect : the location, the staff, the food, the room. The location : There is a mall in the same building. So if you want to go buy water, wine, anything else it's super convenient. Also everything else can be walked to. It's very central. The staff is really helpful. They want to you to enjoy your stay. The breakfast : Amazing! I still miss the passion fruits. The quality is there and the breakfast begins at 7:30. The room : the mattress is really comfortable. The room is also very spacious. It has toiletries, sleepers, dressing gown, mini bar (and everything that is there is free), safe, turn down service and a lot of towels. You really can't go wrong with this hotel.
