Why honeymoon in the Maldives?
There’s a reason why the Maldives ranks highly on honeymoon wish lists – these picture-perfect islands are a real-life desert-island fantasy.
A Maldives honeymoon is exclusive and secluded. Each resort sits on its very own island, so after being whisked away by speedboat or seaplane – there are no long taxi transfers from the airport in this part of the world – you’ll step ashore on a private white-sand beach that’s completely away from it all. It’s as close as it gets to newlywed heaven.
Crystal clear lagoons, vibrant coral reefs and palm-fringed beaches come as standard, while candlelit dinners under starry skies, exclusive upgrades and bespoke experiences-for-two make for an extra special start to married life. And then there’s the accommodation. The iconic overwater villas are particularly popular with honeymooners – because if you can’t justify upgrading to a villa on stilts with direct access to the ocean on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, then when can you? But the secluded beach villas are a wonderfully romantic Maldives honeymoon choice too; often complete with outdoor bathrooms or private plunge pools.
After what may have been a hectic few months planning your wedding, on your honeymoon in the Maldives you may want to do little more than eat, drink, snooze and soak up the sun. We totally understand that; this is the ultimate fly-and-flop destination after all. But if you need some reassurance that there are enough things to do to fill your days here, we can tell you about the world-class snorkelling (often straight from the beach) and diving, thrilling watersports, spa treatments, sunset cruises and picnics on uninhabited islands.
We're the original Maldives experts so we know first-hand which islands offer the most romantic escapes – and the best honeymoon offers, too. Tell us your wish list over a glass of Champagne and we’ll find the Maldives honeymoon that’s right for you.
When is the best time to visit?
The peak season in the Maldives is between November and April, when it’s hot and dry – perfect for jetting off to the sunshine straight after a winter or spring wedding. There’s more rain from May to July and September to November, but the temperature is still a toasty 32 degrees on average and this is when some of the best value offers are available, too. If you’re saying ‘I do’ during these months, think about whether you mind the risk of a few downpours or if you’d prefer to save your honeymoon in the Maldives for later in the year (you could always head off on a fun minimoon closer to home first).
How long should I spend on my Maldives honeymoon?
A week to ten days is ideal. If you’re planning on some serious diving, allow time for any refresher courses. For a two-week honeymoon, consider splitting your stay between two Maldives resorts – one of our favourite Maldives honeymoons is pairing Kuramathi Island Resort with Kandolhu Island.
Where can I twin with my Maldives honeymoon?
For a contrasting beach stay, fly via Dubai and spend a few nights in this mind-defying city. For a combination of tropical adventure and beach, Sri Lanka and the Maldives honeymoons are popular for good reason. With national parks home to elephants and leopards plus ancient ruins and colourful temples to discover, we’d recommend opting for a private driver/guide and tailor-making your own itinerary around this fascinating country.
Can I have my same-sex honeymoon in the Maldives?
Yes. The Maldives is a strict Muslim country, but while the capital, Malé, and all locally inhabited islands are extremely conservative, it’s a different story on the resort islands, where same-sex honeymoon couples can share a double room and exemplary service comes as standard whether you’re gay or straight. Where should I stay?
From tiny specks in the ocean to larger all-inclusive resorts with abundant facilities, there’s a huge choice for honeymoons in the Maldives. We offer over 30 islands here and they’re all pretty special, but these are our absolute favourites for a romantic escape.
