Tented luxury at Garonga Safari Camp

Without leaving camp, guests have seen giraffe, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, elephant, lion and wild dogs…

By Josia Sibuyi
Guide Garonga Safari Lodge

Garonga Safari Camp is located within the Greater Makalali Reserve, a beautiful wilderness area of 22,000 hectares.

Across our three different camps and with a team of 47, we provide a professional and personal service for our guests and can create lots of memories for them, whether it’s surprising them with a breakfast in the bush or setting up a bubble bath under the stars. Guests often say the highlight of their stay is the night they spend on our sleep out deck.

The rooms at Garonga Safari Camp have a canvas canopy roof and textured walls in neutral tones. They are stylishly furnished with four-poster beds, perfectly positioned to take in the views of the bush. Outside on the deck, there is a hammock overlooking the dry riverbed frequented by animals. Without leaving camp, guests have seen giraffe, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, elephant, lion and wild dogs.

I’ve been guiding at Garonga since 2010 and when I take guests out on a game drive or safari walk, you never know what you may see. Sometimes it’s the thrill of the chase as a leopard stalks a large herd of impala or it could be to stop and listen to the sounds of the birds.

When we return from our afternoon game drive, we gather by the campfire for pre-dinner drinks. Our boma dining area is where guests get to experience traditional African food or pizzas direct from our oven, created by our Head Chef Reineth who has been with us for over twenty years. Lit with lanterns, the atmosphere is very special and our guests’ wildlife stories start to flow as much as the South African wine accompanying their delicious food.
