Friendly lodge with great safaris
My husband and I enjoyed the 2 nights we spent here. All of the staff was so friendly and we loved the communal feel of dining with the other guests. Safaris were amazing (even if the days are long!) but you can freely customize your itinerary once you get there. We loved our guide KB! Security staff work hard to keep you safe from animals and elephants at night! Also appreciated the private dining table set up for us outdoors to celebrate our honeymoon. Only disappointments were the water pressure in the room and the sheer number of mosquitoes in our room. The netting didn’t really work so unfortunately our room was the only place we got eaten up in our whole time in Zimbabwe and Botswana!
Living the Dream in Chobe
Having never been to Chobe National Park we were not sure what to expect but the Muchenje Safari Lodge was fabulous!!! We were welcomed by such friendly staff and were made to feel like family! Our every need was catered to and having our laundry done was such a bonus! Our rooms were great, the food was amazing and I could go on and on about the safaris. Our guide Ali was so knowledgeable and personable and went out of his way to make sure we got the most out of our drives. There is no experience like taking a river safari and stopping to have lunch beside a grazing elephant and a sleeping Hippo. Having baboons running across our roof every morn and elephants wandering outside our rooms was something we never expected to experience but it was wonderful! Watching the animals at the watering hole from the sun deck was also very cool. We spent 3 nights and would love to return some day. If in Bostswana on safari this lodge is a must!!!!!
Left feeling a little disappointed
My husband and I stayed at Muchenje on the second stop on our safari holiday. We had an enjoyable stay, the staff were friendly and welcoming. The guides were knowledgable and the safari down by The Chobe was outstanding, once you get there. The road down to the Chobe was a joke, it was almost impassable. The river safari was also a fantastic day out, watching the elephants in the water was a fantastic memory, the lunch was not a highlight, and having to travel an hour on the main roads to get to the boat and return in the dark was not what you would expect. We were slightly disappointed with the overall standard of the premises, it was tired and needed some refurbishment. The bathroom in our room was very very poor and the nets around the bed were well past the need of replacement. The lighting in the rooms in the evening was very limited, we could not see to read or pack for our morning departure without the use of the torch I had packed. It was not really the standard we were expecting for the price we paid and for what is advertised as 4 star
Wonderfully Friendly Muchenje
We spent 3 nights in Muchenje which is in the Chobe Reserve in Chobe National Park. Wonderful setting with truly amazing views. Guides were excellent and we had Ali as our guide who had great knowledge. Food is great and you eat with the other guests although you can choose to dine separately. It’s like a family with all the guests and staff mixing well. Toff and Kiddy are excellent hosts and make you feel so welcome. Lots of activities including walking Safari, night games drives and the amazing river safari where we ate lunch on the river with the elephants! What an experience!
Comfortable with an excellent view
This was our introduction to safari style accommodation. The price is very high but it is all inclusive except for tips to the Safari Guide and staff. The rooms were solidly constructed and offered wonderful views from the patio attached. The lighting in the rooms could be improved, as it is difficult to read and built in charging outlets with USB would be a great addition. The internet is only available at the main lodge and is slow WiFi repeaters in the rooms would be an excellent addition as you are not allowed to walk on the property after dark without the security staff escort. Guests have the feeling of being in a minimal security detention center after dinner locked the chalet. The family style dining provided the evening entertainment and opportunity to meet the other sophisticated and well-travelled guests. We had an excellent knowledgeable guide, Ali, and the drives made up for any quibbles about the rooms. The night safari drive was our only disappointment as we had limited views of only a couple animals and could easily be skipped. The pontoon boat ride on the river was the highlight of our trip with an exceptional picnic lunch aboard while observing large herds of animals especially elephants that we estimated at about 300 animals. This was our introduction to "The African Massage" on the deeply rutted poorly maintained trails of Chobe National Park. One of the ruts was so bad that my mobile phone flipped out of my pant pocket. I was extremely grateful and impressed that the guides found my phone after we departed. The Lodge had it air - shipped to me at the airport in Maun. The main delay in retrieval was that they found two identical phones the same day that could only be identified by the SIMM card inside! Carry all small items in a zipped pocket or bag when out on your safari drives! We could easily have spent an extra day at the lodge to decompress and just laze around the pool
