Selenkay Conservancy game drives

Head out in a 4×4 to explore 15,000 acres of wilderness home to everything from big-tusked elephants to lions and zebras…

Managing Director, Porini Camps

Selenkay Conservancy is a haven for wildlife, which you’ll encounter on a game drive with our expert guides. Certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, the Porini Amboseli Camp guides come from the local Maasai community and have detailed knowledge of the area’s landscape and wildlife. Head out in a 4×4 to explore 15,000 acres of wilderness, home to everything from big-tusked elephants to lions and zebras.

The great thing about Porini is that we don’t stick to any specific game drive schedule. Usually, guests will have one full-day drive in Amboseli National Park but other than that, it’s up to them when and how they explore Selenkay. Typically, they might head out before dawn with a picnic breakfast and come back to camp for lunch, perhaps head out again for sundowners and do a night drive after dinner.

There’s fantastic elephant viewing in Selenkay, you can go off-road within 20 feet of the big tusked elephants, it’s a real highlight. We also have rarer species that you don’t often spot in the national park, like leopards and gerenuks. Then there’s plenty of zebra, impala and gazelles, as well as lesser kudu and wildebeest. Amboseli is also one of the best eco-systems for birding and since we’re on a private conservancy, there’s a chance to take night drives and see nocturnal species like the white-tailed mongoose.

Selenkay is a very arid area, so one of the best places for wildlife sightings is at our three waterholes, two of which have platforms where you can enjoy picnics and sundowners while watching the animals. I was there ten days ago and was lucky enough to see the relative of a famous large male called Marty, who was born in Selenkay, along with a female and her three cubs. We work with conservation researchers in the area, so our guides know all the lions by sight.
