Set along the forested Mara River, the camp has an exclusive, intimate feel with just 10 tents nestled among the trees…
Stay in one of the most wildlife rich areas of the Maasai Mara at Il Moran, a luxury safari experience inspired by the original camps dating back to the 1920s. Set along the forested Mara River, the camp has an exclusive, intimate feel with just 10 tents nestled among the trees. Each one is huge, with a custom, olive-wood bed and en-suite bathroom clad with a claw-foot tub. You can literally fall out of bed and watch hippos wallowing in the river from your private veranda.
We’re blessed with a location so incredible that it’s been featured in documentaries like the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Planet Earth. The famous Marsh Pride of lions are right on the doorstep and this stretch of riverine forest draws elephants, monkeys and fantastic birdlife. We’re completely unfenced, so you might see game wandering through camp and our security team will escort you to and from your tent after dark. Enjoy meals in our dining tent and gather around the firepit for evening riverside drinks.
Spend your days exploring the Maasai Mara National Reserve on game drives with our professional guides, who have the biggest smiles in the world. They know the area inside out and have a sixth sense about where to find the animals. With their help, you’ll enjoy some extraordinary wildlife sightings, especially during the Great Migration, as we’re not far from the dramatic river crossings. There’s an excellent chance of spotting the Big Five, since the Mara’s few rhinos live in the forest near camp.
If you’ve got time for other activities, you can visit our community projects. Governors’ has been working with the local Maasai people for nearly 50 years, offering support with medical clinics, schools and job training schemes. Guests particularly enjoy our Maasai village visits and sundowners on the Mara plains. I’d highly recommend the sunrise balloon safari, where you’ll float over the Mara River, spotting wildlife below, then land for a champagne bush breakfast – it’s the ultimate safari experience.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Becky, who's travelled extensively in Kenya. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it alone. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the safari rangers, local village chiefs and camp managers you'll be talking about for years to come. Start planning today, call us, email an enquiry or arrange a phone or video appointment for ideas and advice.
