Things to do in Kenya

Enjoy Kilimanjaro views at Voyager Ziwani

Guests say they love the views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the peace and quiet at Voyager Ziwani…

By Stephen Lekatoo
Naturalist and guide, Voyager Ziwani Camp

Voyager Ziwani is a luxury tented camp set in a conservancy on the edge of Tsavo National Park. Once a German garrison from WWII, it’s now a peaceful haven next to the Sante River. You can sit on the veranda of your tent and watch the crocodiles, birds and hippos, who sleep on an island in the middle of the dam. One of the best viewpoints is from our restaurant, which overlooks the water and Mount Kilimanjaro – you can see the snowy peak of Kibo and then Mawenzi to the left.

We have 25 tents with en-suite bathrooms where you can relax after game drives in the conservancy or in Tsavo National Park. Many guests spend two or three days here exploring. We’ll pack a picnic lunch and sundowners to visit sights like the Mzima Springs, the Shetani Lava Flow and Chala, a crater lake that’s a hotspot for wildlife. As we’re set in a conservancy rather than the national park, guests are allowed to take part in guided bush walks, visit the local Maasai community and enjoy night time game drives.

Along the way, there’s a chance to spot all of the Big Five except for rhinos. You never know what kind of drama you might stumble across on a game drive. One day, I was with an American group and we heard a warthog making a lot of noise by the river; when we investigated we saw about ten crocodiles trying to pull it into the water. We also have leopards, lion prides and plenty of cheetahs around our conservancy. At the moment, we’re fortunate to have a female cheetah here with her cubs.

Guests say that they love the views of Kilimanjaro and the peace and quiet at Voyager Ziwani. Sometimes, they find it hard to leave camp because they just want to relax by the dam. Our Adventurers’ Club for kids is also a highlight and offers activities like archery, natural dying classes, animal footprint casting and fire making. Don’t miss the stargazing after dinner too, the skies are so clear you can see constellations, the Milky Way and if you look through our telescope, you can even spot planets.
