Its thousand-strong flocks of flamingos may have moved on, but Nakuru is still one of the Great Rift Valley’s must-visit lakes. Set in its own national park, the saline lake is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its staggering array of colourful wildlife and varied plant species. The sparkling waters are surrounded by lush vegetation that animals love to munch on and further afield, you’ll find acacia forests full of birds, escarpment viewpoints and the Makalia waterfall.
At its peak, Nakuru drew up to two million flamingos who came to feast on its algae but when water levels rose in 2014, they fled to other lakes in the Great Rift Valley such as Bogoria. Today, as evidence of the rising waters, you can see the skeletons of drowned trees fringing the Nakuru shore. Bird watchers won’t be disappointed though, as you can still spot over 450 species of birds at the lake, including pelicans and cormorants. Bring your binoculars and park up on the water’s edge for a birdwatching bonanza.

It could be one of your best chances to spot this endangered member of the Big Five on your Kenya trip. Look out for other spectacular animals while on a game drive in Nakuru, from lions and hippos to rare leopards and Rothschild’s giraffe. Take a picnic lunch and ask your safari guide to stop at Flamingo or Lion Hill for supreme views.
