Uber-cool hotel group, The Standard, brings its quirky style and en-vogue atmosphere to the Maldives.

Take everything you know about Maldives resorts and shelve it for a moment. Despite its rather contrary name, The Standard isn’t like other resorts. It’s upbeat, it’s wildly colourful, it’s bold. And it stands out from the crowd. Where else would you find the Maldives’ largest disco ball, a glass-floored nightclub where sea life meets night life, and villas which have an activity wall complete with snorkel mask, fins and life jackets, and a disco ball suspended over the bath? Then there are the kid-friendly bits such as a seasonal inflatable water park, kite flying and the cooler-than-your-average children’s and teens' club.

Anywhere else, this off-beat vibe could distract you from your destination. Not at The Standard. There’s still a real sense of place here thanks to the focus on local eats; at the one-of-a-kind venue, Guduguda, you’ll be taken on a journey of Maldivian tastes as you sit on cushions around a traditional low table either inside or out in the open. Eating flavour- and spice-loaded curries with your hands to the soundtrack of the waves is one for the memory bank. If it’s the typically tropical island evening with your toes in the sand evening you’re after, then BBQ Shak post sundown is for you.

The Standard is where Miami’s South Beach meets the Indian Ocean: think, sun-kissed games of tennis, fruity shisha, cocktails/mocktails packed with a surprising amount of good-for-you ingredients and a spa that pretty much demands your presence at least once. The accommodation is all Maldives though, with villas steps from the sand or out over the water. We love that friend groups are as welcome here as couples and families thanks to the Two Bedroom Villas that sleep up to eight.
