The staff was super friendly and helpful
To start. We’re from Canada, so this trip to cinnamon dhonveli was a long travel time for us 40+ hours. After we got to the Male airport we’ve located the cinnamon dhonveli booth just outside the exit. We had to wait about 15 minutes for another couple to arrive from a different flight. Not a huge deal. But we’ve already traveled for a long time already. So a bit bothersome at the almost end of our long journey. The boat transfer to the resort from the airport was about 20-25 minutes. Luckily the water was relatively calm that day. The entrance to the resort is rather disappointing considering the impression you would have from seeing the resort pictures. So first impression wasn’t great. Once arrived we were escorted to the temporary check in office/front desk Cool drink and cold towel after arriving is always a nice touch. We’re soon told the resort is undergoing a complete renovation. And 75% of the resort wouldn’t be accessible. But since we’re not anywhere near that part of the resort it wasn’t a bother to us. Now the great part. For us anyway. The receptionist offered us an upgraded plan. From all inclusive to premium all inclusive. As well as a free transfer to the newly finished sister resort called cinnamon velifushi maldives! I’ll be doing a separate review on that resort as well. We we’re not only surprised but also impressed by their generous offer. We gratefully accepted. We spent the first three days at dhonveli in our over sunset water bungalow with the small glass in floor the room the see the fish below. The food wasn’t to our standards but you definitely won’t go hungry. The service staff was outstanding and always had a friendly smile for you. So the service was awesome! The water was crystal clear. But the water currant was a bit strong at times. So snorkeling wasn’t always advisable at those times. The only thing that bothered us during out short stay, was the amount of construction debris we found either floating in the water or that washed up on the beach. I’ve tried to fish out anything I could reach safely. Ultimately the management should be responsible for ensuring that no debris should enter these beautiful and clear waters during the renovation period. It was very disappointing to see stuff floating away without anyone even caring. ☹️ even worse when a barge loaded with construction debris left the resort on a very windy day. A lot of loose garbage was blowing off into the water! The garbage load should be covered or better contained during the transfer. I hope the environmental damaging issues with the construction garbage will be Addressed and delt with promptly. The end result of this renovation will most likely beautiful and the cinnamon Dhonveli Resort will return to its four start rating.
We booked our holiday to cinnamon dhonveli in February and was to supposed to arrive this week in an overwater bungalow and have been looking forward to it ever since, that was until it got ruined 3 days before our departure, we were told that they had to move us to a different resort and had ‘upgraded’ us to a beach villa which is nowhere near the same standard as what we originally booked, they have only offered us £400 compensation which is not good enough as I’m sure if we was to book this new resort ourselves we would have saved a lot more money than £400 considering the difference in standards
I am reading recent reviews and can't believe they are from the same place! I've ticked one star only cause I have to pick something.....zero would have been my option. We arrived from another resort on 1st December and instantly had an underwhelming impression. We had to search the airport in Male for our transfer and on arrival of the speedboat at the resort saw boats full of rubbish and no proper reception area. We were taken to temporary reception and waited in middle of the day heat outside, on furniture that looked like weathered backyard furniture needing retirement. 1 plus....staff very friendly and apologetic....they obviously knew what we were about to find out. We were upgraded to one of about 4 completed over water suites as pretty much 80% of the island is under construction. To get to the room which was at the very end of the boardwalk we had to go through all the construction and past all the workers. It was like a bad rubbish dump....trash and construction rubbish everywhere and not to mention the exposed electrical wires! We walked from our room back to lunch rather than take the buggy as this is what we would do anywhere else. As a female, all I can say is it felt unsafe and totally uncomfortable as all the construction workers seemed to stop and glare. Had my husband not been there I never would have left the room. This is our 4th time to the beautiful Maldives and 7th resort and never have we seen anything like this. All of our previous experiences have been 4+/5 rated. People spend good money here and for many this is a once in a lifetime trip. I feel sorry for those that got this as their once in a lifetime. We checked in on the 1st and left very early on the 2nd. We will never be back!
Last-minute cancelation by resort!
If i could give Dhonveli Cinnamon negative stars, I would --- our experience has been such a nightmare. I pre-paid for a 8-night all-inclusive stay in an Overwater Suite with a 2 month advance to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. 1 hour before my husband and I were about to board our international flights from US to Maldives, we received an email from the resort that "due to construction" they were unable to accomodate us, and had "courteously" upgraded us to a Beach Room at a nearby resort. The room type offered didn't even come close to the sprawling Overwater Suite that we researched for hours. The stress of responding back and forth via email while en-route to airport after paying in advance thousands of USD for a special, romantic stay doesn't even compare to the immense disappointment of ruining our special holiday. The resort simply stopped responding to my emails when I rejected the relocation "upgrade". Such lack of professionalism is simply unacceptable. Why a 5 star resort would hide construction until a day prior to check-in on a pre-paid reservation is verging on fraud. I'm traveling at the moment and hoping my agency is able to find an altenative at no notice whatsoever.
We have just returned from Cinnamon Dhonveli - what an amazing holiday! I don't think I have ever experienced such wonderfully friendly staff anywhere else over the years! They were always smiling, happy to help and they all made our holiday incredibly special. Sattan, Malinda, our lovely Turtle guide, waiters, reception staff - I couldn't name you all but each and every one of you made it all the more special so thank you all ...
