Perched on top of the Mto wa Mbu escarpment, Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge overlooks the national park’s huge soda lake. The views are the centre-piece of the lodge, whether you’re relaxing on your private veranda, swimming in the hilltop infinity pool or dining on our restaurant deck. It’s especially beautiful at sunset, when you can enjoy drinks on the escarpment cliffs, with Lake Manyara shimmering in the distance.
Lake Manyara National Park is famous for its many colourful birds and this is reflected in the design of the lodge. Each room has hand-woven, bird-themed rugs on the walls and is decorated with blues and pinks inspired by the lake and its flamingos. We’ve used traditional local architecture, with circular, two-storey rondavels that have thatched roofs. Each room features intricate Maasai beadwork and wooden furnishings.
Our Flamingo restaurant in particular has been built like a Maasai boma with a cathedral-like ceiling. Food is made with ingredients sourced from communities around the national park and after dinner, we hold Maasai dance and music performances on the terrace. For a special dining experience, I’d recommend booking one of our bush breakfasts or dinners, which will be set up on the edge of the escarpment, with a campfire and lake views.
Most guests spend a day exploring Lake Manyara National Park on a game drive. You’re bound to see plenty of animals, from elephants and giraffes to antelopes and hippos. If you’re lucky, you might spot endangered rhinos and Manyara’s rare tree-climbing lions. However, people are mainly drawn to Manyara for its amazing birds – there are over 300 migratory species here, including flamingos and long-crested eagles. If you want to explore further, we offer nature walks, mountain biking, canoeing on the lake and trips to nearby villages.
