Fish River Lodge, on the Edge of Eternity

We’re the only lodge located right on the rim of the world’s second-biggest canyon…

By Zanelle Zaayman
Co-manager of Fish River Lodge

Staying at Fish River Lodge is like standing on the edge of eternity – we’re the only lodge located right on the rim of the world’s second-biggest canyon. I love seeing guests’ reactions when they arrive and take in their first view of Fish River Canyon and its vast, otherworldly landscape. We’re set in a 45,000-hectare nature park on the western part of the canyon, with no other lodges around, so it’s truly isolated.

The canyon inspired the lodge’s design, with dry stone walls that blend into the environment. Everything is built to showcase the views; there’s a wrap-around wooden deck and tall windows that allow you to lie in bed and admire the scenery. We have a rim-view pool for more spectacular canyon-gazing and the main lodge features cosy fireplaces that you can dine beside. To help preserve this pristine landscape, the lodge has an eco-friendly focus, run entirely by solar power.

You can spend your days exploring the canyon with our expert guides. Driving down there is extraordinary – you’re surrounded by this 500-million-year-old geological wonder. We offer a range of hikes, drives and even fat-bike canyon tours, complete with picnics and perhaps a swim in a natural rock pool. Your guide will point out native plant species and if you’re lucky, you might spot some wildlife.

We’re the only lodge with access to this part of the canyon, so you’ll have it all to yourself when you’re hiking or taking game drives. Fish River Lodge is also known for its friendly, personal service and exceptional cuisine, which includes three-course dinners with Namibian meats and locally-grown produce. What guests love most though are the show-stopping views at Fish River Lodge; there’s an incredible sense of space and you can lose yourself in the scenery.
