Stay in a traditional African-style rondavel at Okonjima Bushcamp. The camp lies on the Okonjima Nature Reserve, a former cattle ranch that’s now a conservation success story and home to the AfriCat Foundation. You’ll enjoy game drives and nature walks with our expert guides, spotting everything from leopards to plains game, brown hyenas and even endangered rhinos and pangolins if you’re extremely lucky.
You’ll sleep in one of our eight thatched-roof African rondavels. The rooms face east and look out over the savannah. The architecture is inspired by nature, with curved lines and ochre colours that echo the sandstone Omboroko Mountains. Each rondavel has its own sala, an open-air space with chaises lounges overlooking a little waterhole that the bush pigs and birds love.
The bedrooms also have huge glass windows for unrestricted views of the savannah, so you can lie in bed and watch oryx, giraffe and zebra wander by. The heart of the camp is our camelthorn pod-shaped lapa, which has a curio shop, restaurant and lounge with flickering fireplaces. Our menu offers everything from a breakfast buffet where the chef can cook you up a special bushman’s omelette, to local venison and produce grown in our gardens.
What makes Okonjima unique though is the research we’ve undertaken over the last 57 years into the wildlife and ecology of the reserve. So, when you head out on a game drive, our expert guides will be able to tell you all about how each species you spot fits into this conservation area. Guests love to wander our nature trails and take specialist activities like rhino tracking and, when the weather permits, exciting night drives.
